Welcome to our first ever teach n talk
I am excited for how this night will go
Just to first give you a little bit of an overview so you know how the night will go
First of all some quick rules
your table needs to at least have 1 leader sitting at it
No moving chairs, unless we have to because we don’t have enough leaders
We are going to unpack a spiritual topic together
Kinda similar to how our previews were last semester
However if you noticed you are all sitting at round tables
There is a reason for that
As we discuss our topic for tonight
We are going to have some pauses in between where I am going to give a question. you will discuss
That being said our topic for tonight is creating spiritual habits that actually stick
So as we talk about this. Someone might not know what that is
who can give me some examples of a spiritual habit
All good examples very good
That being Spiritual habits are something that a very important to the faith
And so as we talk about this tonight we are going to talk about 4 scriptures tonight about this topic
1.
1.
Psalm 1:1–3 “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”
We can see even in some of the first Psalms written David is telling us the joys of delighting in the law of the Lord
Not only is there beauty in not following bad things
But genuine beauty in the Law of the Lord
I wanted to start off with this because I think for many of when we think of spiritual habits
Its that thing that we have to do
Well I HAVE to read my bible
For some of you you literal HAVE to do it for school right
And so this scripture sort of breaks down that idea
because spiritual habits aren’t meant to be a chore, but a Joy
Question time:
1.Can you think of a time when prayer, Bible reading, or worship actually felt life-giving? What made it different?
2.What pressures (church culture, guilt, comparison, routines) can turn joy into duty?
3.How might our view of God change the way we approach spiritual habits?
2.
2.
Matthew 6:7–8 ““When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!”
Jesus spends time talking about the spiritual habit of prayer
And he says don’t babble on
But he make it clear that God knows the things that you need before you even share them
When I read this scripture what I feel like Jesus is trying to say
Make your spiritual habits simple
There are so many times that we open up the Bible
And do the pray and point technique you know what I am talking about? lol
How many of you have done that before?
The Bible is not a magic 8 ball first of all
But even more so it doesn’t need to be complicated
Does every single thing in this book point to the Lord
100%, but we don’t have to have an angel visit is in a divine appointment to get value of our of prayer, and scripture time
I used to have a Pastor that we would say if you get into the habit of reading even just a page a day
God can do so much with that
Question time:
1.What distractions or expectations make us feel like we’re ‘doing it wrong’ unless it’s intense or impressive? Why do you think we feel this way?
2. “If you stripped your faith down to the basics, what would actually remain?”
3.
3.
Joshua 1:7–8 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”
In this scripture God is talking to Joshua
He gives him this charge
Be careful to obey the laws
But I want you to meditate on the scriptures
He is very specific and he says to do this day and night
And so if Joshua is going to be meditating on them
Than it has got to be apart of his daily routine
God doesn’t just say “yeah read them once or twice”
But meditate
So what I see from this scripture about our habits is to
Make a routine
The more that you can make it a routine. the more it get engrained into your everyday life
Question time:
1.Do you have any spiritual routines right now? If so explain them, and how often you do them?
2. What is a spiritual routine that you can put in place? How, and when would you do it?
4.
4.
Hebrews 10:24–25 “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
Sometime last year
Delaney and I started the Bible recap reading plan together
One of the features on the Bible app is add friends to you reading plan
There would be weeks that I can see where she is at in the plan
And where I am
I share this to tell you
Don’t peruse God alone
Yes you should your alone time with God
Read and pray by yourself
but this scripture shows us that we are supposed to have accountability in our Spiritual habits
Someone that can check in on you
Call you
Text you
Say hey you need to read today
Hey have you prayed in a while
Question time:
PRAY WITH YOUR TABLE
