Pray for God to open their eyes and draw them to Christ.
Acts 26:18 ESV
...to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in [Jesus].’

Review of Scriptural principles for evangelism

5 mins

No “one-size-fits-all” method in the Bible.

Jesus’ and Paul’s ‘method’ varied from person to person based upon the individual’s situation and need; there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach. But, several commonalities can be observed.

Core aspects of Jesus’ and Paul’s evangelism method:

Go where lost people are.
Use kindness and break social barriers to create opportunities.
Bridge from the mundane to the spiritual.
Keep the conversation focused on spiritual matters.
Boldly (but compassionately) calling out pet sins and idols
Don’t get into debates.
Be patient and quiet.
Don’t water down the truth.

Core truths in the gospel message:

Jesus is King of the Universe.
Mankind is outside the Kingdom because of sin and must repent of sin and idolatry.
The judgment of God will come upon those who refuse to repent.
The path to reconciliation with God and eternal life is through faith in Christ.

Overview of the “Share Jesus Without Fear” Method

10 mins
William Fay and Linda Evans Shepherd, Share Jesus without Fear (Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1999).

The Five “Share Jesus Questions”

These questions act as a funnel. You can start anywhere on the list, as you feel led, or skip straight to the “Share Jesus Scriptures.”
Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
To you, who is Jesus?
Do you think there is a heaven or a hell?
If you died today, where would you go? Why?
By the way, if what you were believing is not true, would you want to know?
Ask: “May I share some Scriptures with you?”
If the answer is yes, open your Bible to the next phase.
If the answer is no, do nothing. But remember you have not failed. You have been obedient to share the gospel, and the results belong to God.

The “Share Jesus Scriptures”

Do not read these, just summarize them—these are merely here for reference on the handout.
Ask your friend to read the verse aloud.
Next, ask him, “What does this say to you?” If your friend gives an incorrect answer, say, “Read it again.”
Continue this process, until your friend understands the Scripture.
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 ESV
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Romans 10:9–11 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
2 Corinthians 5:15 ESV
15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
Romans 10:13 ESV
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
What kind of person is the Romans Road gospel presentation best suited for? What kind of person is it not well suited for?

The Five Commitment Questions

1. Are you a sinner?
2. Do you want forgiveness of sins?
3. Do you believe Jesus Christ died on the cross for you and rose again?
4. Are you willing to surrender your life to Jesus Christ?
5. Are you ready to invite Jesus Christ into your life and into your heart?
6. Be silent and pray!

Sinner’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, I have sinned against you. I want forgiveness for all my sins. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me and rose again. Father, I give you my life to do with as you wish. I want Jesus Christ to come into my life and into my heart. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Gospel presentations for low-context unbelievers

For individuals with little or no background in Scripture, gospel presentations should begin at Creation (in the beginning).

Creation

Genesis 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:31 ESV
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good...
What does that say to you? God is the Creator of the Universe. As its Creator, he is also its rightful King. He created the world and humanity good and gave us laws to follow to live in harmony with him and his creation.

The Fall

Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...
What does that say to you? Every single human that has ever lived (except Jesus) has repeatedly broken God’s laws. When we disobey God and break his laws, this is called “sin.”
Isaiah 59:2 ESV
2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
What does that say to you? Sin breaks our relationship with God and causes pain and misery.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What does that say to you? The penalty we deserve for sin is death—spiritual death, which means eternal separation from God in Hell. But, God also offers a gift—eternal life—through Jesus Christ.

The Rescue

Isaiah 53:5 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
What does that say to you? Jesus took the penalty our sins deserved upon himself to make it possible for us to be forgiven and reconciled to God.
John 3:16–18 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
What does that say to you? God loves people and does not desire to see them go to Hell. So, he gave his only Son, Jesus, to take our place. If we simply believe in Jesus, God gives us eternal life. If we refuse, we are condemned.
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
What does that say to you? If I believe in my heart that Jesus died for my sins and rose again and I acknowledge that he is God and my King, I will be saved and made right with God.
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
What does that say to you? There’s no good works I can do to deserve salvation. It is a gift (grace) that God gives. No one deserves to be saved.

New Life

2 Corinthians 5:15 ESV
15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
What does that say to you? When God saves us, he gives us a new life and a new purpose—to live for Jesus.
Revelation 21:3–5 ESV
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” 5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
What does that say to you? Those who have repented of their sins and trusted Christ will live forever with God in heaven, where there is no sin, death, or pain. This is the gift of eternal life.
Revelation 22:12 ESV
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
What does that say to you? Jesus will return someday, and we will give an account of how we have lived.
