Introduction

Scripture reading — Brinnley
Lectio divina-ish (read with, listen once, listen again)
Responsive reading — What stood out to you?

Explanation

1:1-2 — Nineveh is great in terms of size and sin.
Modern day Pyongyang?
1:3— You can ignore God all you want, but that doesn’t make him any less present.
Jonah runs the opposite direction
To Spain instead of Mosul, Iraq
He’s trying to go where he won’t hear God’s voice
“Don’t pray for me” — P&N
“Who runs away from the God of the sea in a ship?” — NIVAC (v. 9)
1:4 — It’s better to be in Nineveh with God than at sea without him.
“the safest place for your child to be is in the will of God” (told at NFC workshop)
“When you flee from the Lord you never get to where you’re going and you always pay your own fare, but when you go God’s way…you always get to where you’re going and he picks up the tab!” — ?
1:6 — Those who hide from God in their sin are often the harshest with others.
There’s a strong connection between not receiving grace for yourself and not extending it to others, and vice versa
Jonah never actually prays to God
He’s guilty himself, but his lack of grace for others is connected to his lack of calling out for grace for himself.
grace/truth matrix
Jonah is never afraid to die and God chooses him to go into the belly of the enemy; his issue is not with his courage but with God’s characteralone
1:9 — Being afraid of God and fearing God are not the same thing.
1:12 — Even then, he doesn’t repent, really. He’s ready to die so they don’t have to, but still not to go to Nineveh. “He wants to believe in a God who only judges and does not forgive” and this view ruins his life and his witness
1:13-14 — They’re more reverent than Jonah and surrender to God sooner instead of trying things their own way
1:16 — A faulty messenger doesn’t negate a faithful Messiah.
