Hope from Hebrews #16 - The Death of Our Mediator

Text: Hebrews 9:15-28

Thesis: To note the necessity and benefits of the death of Jesus our Mediator.

Introduction:

(1)   “The job of a mediator is to arbitrate in order to bring two parties together – here, the holy God and sinful humanity” (R. K. Hughes 1:234).

(2)   How did He mediate? “By means of death” (v. 15)

Discussion:

I.                   Why did He die (vv. 15-22)?

A.    Our Sins (Past & Present; v. 15)

B.     New Covenant (vv. 16-22)

1.      vv. 19-20 – Cf. Exod. 24:3-8

2.      v. 21 – Cf. Exod. 40:9-15; Lev. 8 (Consecration of Aaron and his sons)

II.                What was/is accomplished by His death (vv. 23-28)?

A.    Better Purity (v. 23)

1.      ‘Heavenly things’ = us

2.      Cf. 1 Pet. 1:2 – sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ

B.     Better Representation (v. 24)

1.      “He lives forever to plead with God on their behalf” (Heb. 7:25b, NLT).

2.      “Who then will condemn us? Will Christ Jesus? No, for he is the one who died for us and was raised to life for us and is sitting at the place of highest honor next to God, pleading for us” (Rom. 8:34, NLT).

3.      “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1, NKJV).

C.     Better Sacrifice (vv. 25-28a)

D.    Better Hope (v. 28b)

Conclusion:

(1)   Jesus has brought God and man together through His sacrifice.

(2)   Have you accepted His sacrifice?
