Leadership 101 #2:

Delegation

Thesis: To note the importance to delegation in developing godly leadership skills.

Introduction:

(1)   Last week, we stressed the importance of motivation.

(2)   Today, we will note the need for delegation.

(a)    In Exodus 18, Jethro opened Moses’ eyes to this need.

1)      Jethro said, “You will surely wear out, both yourself and these people who are with you, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone” (v. 18).

2)      Jethro then proceeded to teach Moses the art of delegation.

(b)    In Nehemiah 3, Nehemiah puts delegation into practice by observing 3 key principles.

Discussion:

I.                    The Principle of Coordination

A.     Note:  “next to him,” “next to them,” “after him,” and “after them” are used 28 times in Nehemiah 3

B.     Nehemiah strategically made assignments for work.

1.      He assigned jobs to people according to their residence.

a.       This allowed the people to work close to their homes; thus, providing practicality.

b.      Also, this encouraged the people to see the job through because they would want the wall finished to protect their homes.

2.      He gave assignments to commuters to the city.

a.       Sometimes, outside help is needed and useful.

b.      This demonstrates that Nehemiah explored all options.

3.      He gave assignments according to one’s vocation.

a.       We all have various talents to use (cf. Matt. 25).

b.      All of our talents and us are needed (cf. 1 Cor. 12).

C.     This is similar to Moses’ choosing leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens (Exod. 18:24-27).

II.                 The Principle of Cooperation

A.     In Nehemiah 3, each person did his/her job without fighting.

B.     Today, we struggle with this.

1.      Some of us fail to carry our load.

2.      Some of us cause strife over petty arguments.

III.               The Principle of Commendation

A.     Nehemiah mentioned 75 people by name and recognized some of their accomplishments.

B.     This is exactly what Paul meant when he said “honor to whom honor” (Rom. 13:7).

Conclusion:

(1)    Will we be involved in the delegation process in order to accomplish great things?

(2)    Are you in a position where God can use you?
