We are in an identity crisis.

Our nation. Maybe our community. Definitely our young people and some older individuals.

If we want to share the Gospel we must learn to communicate effectively.

This is no easy task. In a world filled with “talking heads” and “noise” we will not be able to compete if we try to shout and talk over. We must learn to slow down, listen to people, truly hear them, and then share our story with them.

General revelation-Knowledge of God through the created world.

This is part of what I believe is meant in verse 16 when it talks about grace in place of grace already given. Psalms and Romans teach us that creation makes known who God is so that we may start to seek him.

Special revelation-Knowledge revealed by God about who Jesus is.

John the Baptist reports that God gave him a word to know who the messiah would be.

Jesus is the true Passover Lamb.

John says as a witness Jesus is THE lamb of God who takes away THE sin of THE world. More will be shared later but we need to see Jesus as doing what we cannot do ourselves.
The debate: Passover Lamb, Exodus Lamb, Daily Sacrificial Lamb or another?

Jesus is greater than us.

John knew that Jesus was always greater than he. More will be said in John 3 but right now this is important for us. Is Jesus greater than yourself? Is there someone/something more important than He?

Jesus is the Anointed One and the Spirit never leaves Him.

The Spirit of God woudl at times come upon people in the OT but would never stay put. Jesus was the first where the Spirit cam and remained. This is what John saw, this is what word he was given to say—He is the ONE!

We must evaluate ourselves in light of Jesus.

We will be asked, “who are you?” John was and this is not bad. We must allow our identity and definition be made in light of who Jesus is.

By the grace of Jesus we serve Him.

John talks about not being worthy to untie the sandals of Jesus, a task of a slave. On our own we are not worthy.

Be a witness for Jesus!

Know who you are in comparison to Him. Share what you have seen. Do so in a way people can hear.
