[Introduction]
Book of John
Turn to John 2
John 2:1–12 ESV
1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.
John 2:1–12 ESV
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
John 2:1–12 ESV
8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom
John 2:1–12 ESV
10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Reminder of the Book of John
Purpose Statement of John
John 20:30–31 ESV

Purpose Statement: John exists that you may know Jesus, love Jesus, and have life in Jesus.

Helpful Context
Weddings
Usually lasted a week
Financial responsibilities lay on the groom
To run out of wine would have been embarrassing and potentially condemning
Wine
Commonplace (varied in purpose)
Preach the Text 1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.
John 2:1–12 ESV
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
“Woman...” = Ma’am
Mary (Jesus’ mom) knows what is true about him. But also trusts Jesus’ judgement and doesn’t force his hand.
“My hour has not yet come...” meaning Jesus knows the right timing for his public ministry
John 2:1–12 ESV
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
Stone Jars of Purification
Jars used by the Jews for ceremonial washing
Stone for maximum purity (no sediment)
6 20-30 gallon Jars = 120-180 gallons of water!
3000-4600 glasses of wine
If there were 150 guests, that’d be about 20-30 glasses/person!
Why did Jesus use these? Why not fill the wine skins that already existed?
The Jars were used for purification
You cleansed yourself at these jars in order to be clean at the party
Jesus says, come purify yourself with me, what comes from me is not just purity, but joy
Master of the Feast = Wedding Planner/Coordinator
Make sure all logistics are covered
Remember the Pause below at end of verse 8
John 2:1–12 ESV
8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom
PAUSE
Perspective of the Servants
Asked to haul water back and forth and fill these massive jars with water
The strange part was asking them to serve it to their boss
John 2:1–12 ESV
10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
V11 tells us this was one of his first public signs with specific purpose:
Manifest/Reveal his glory
His disciples believed who he was truly now
The Jars were used for purification
You cleansed yourself at these jars in order to be clean at the party
Jesus says, come purify yourself with me, what comes from me is not just purity, but joy
Taste and see that Jesus is good
Jesus didn’t just make wine, he made “the best wine”
Do you know why people shrug their shoulders at Jesus and christianity?
They find a people who are in just as much need of joy and satisfaction as the rest of the world
They walk into our homes and see just as much disfunction or chaos as any other faith
Question of Application
Are you marked by a deep joy that is contagious?
Do people want to get a taste of what you have?
Categories of life:
Home and Family
KIDS LISTEN UP
Ephesians 6:1–4 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Your parents will not always be easy to love and/or obey
Honor them in how you obey because you love Jesus
FATHERS LISTEN UP
Ephesians 6:1–4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Your kids shouldn’t question the joy of the Lord because they’ve seen it in you
2 FEARs:
My kids would know the rules, follow my orders, but not experience the sweetness of the gospel
Obsess over the silly and never have the capacity for serious joy
Uncompromised, Unshakeable, Deep fun —> Deep discipline & instruction
My goal: Teach my kids to know when to be “happy silly & happy serious”
Depth involves:
Deep feelings of grief and hatred of sin
Deep feelings of Joy and Thankfulness
1 Thessalonians 2:11–12 ESV
11 For you know how, like a father with his children, 12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
Work
Colossians 3:23–24 ESV
23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Continuing from above:
Ephesians 6:5–9 ESV
5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. 9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.
Suffering & Hardship
2 Corinthians 4:16–18 ESV
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Romans 8:18 ESV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Friendship
Galatians 6:1–10 ESV
1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load. 6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
*OPTIONAL*
Romans 15:5–7 ESV
5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Jesus is not some cool guy at the party who can fix your lack of alcohol
Jesus beckons all to come be purified and to walk away completely satisfied
Nehemiah 8:
The people of Israel are being re-established
They gather all the people and Ezra (the priest) reads the Law
The people are torn up about their sin
Nehemiah 8:9–12 ESV
9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
What is our strength?
The joy of the Lord is our strength
GOSPEL
My Prayer is that we would be a people of the deepest conviction about our sin and evil… And would also be a people of the most joy in what we have been given in Jesus.
Invitation for people who don’t find their joy in the Lord

Conclusion & Benediction
Ephesians 3:14–21 ESV
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

[Communion]
1 Corinthians 11:23–26
“23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
