Text: Psalm 139:14-18
On January 22, 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday of January (or close to that) as National Sanctity of Human Life Day.

Total number of abortions in US (1973 – 2021): 65.4 million+
Number of abortions in US (2024): ~1,038,000
Abortions per day: 2,844
Abortions per hour: 118
That averages out to 1 abortion every 30 seconds!
In the first six months of 2025 the most recent data estimates that there were almost 592,000 abortions.
That is equal to just over 3,200 abortions a day.
And those are the statistics even after the “constitutional right” of abortion was overturned in June of 2022!
The attacks against life - for that is what abortion is - has continued.
Just this month, activist group, Shout Your Abortion, released a book entitled, Abortion Is Everything.
From their website:
Abortion Is Everything speaks directly to five to eight-year-olds about what abortion is, how it might feel, and why people have abortions.
With accessible, inclusive language, Abortion Is Everything frames abortion as the actualization of a uniquely human superpower: our capacity to imagine the future and make choices that lead us towards the life we envision.
Abortion is a tool that allows human beings to shape our destinies, and which has shaped the entire world around us.

What does “the sanctity of life” mean?
What does “the sanctity of life” mean?
The sanctity of life is the belief that human life is inherently sacred, holy, and precious, stemming from religious or philosophical views, meaning it holds intrinsic dignity and worth from conception to natural death, demanding protection against threats like abortion, euthanasia, war, poverty, and injustice, making all human life valuable and worthy of respect and care.
All human life is valuable and is worthy of respect and care - from conception till the moment that God determines its end.
What makes human life holy? What makes human life special? What makes human life valuable and worthy of respect and care?
There are two answers to those questions.
Turn to and read Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 2:8, 18, 21-25.
All life comes from God.
All life comes from God.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
If life comes from God than all of mankind belongs to God and has a responsibility to God.
If life does not come from God than mankind is free to do as they please.
Humans beings were created in the image of God.
Humans beings were created in the image of God.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
I’m not going to take the time to talk about what it means that mankind has been created in the image of God.
But…
…there can be little doubt that the “image of God” in which man was created must entail those aspects of human nature which are not shared by animals—attributes such as a moral consciousness, the ability to think abstractly, an understanding of beauty and emotion, and,
If mankind is created in the image of God than we have a responsibility to God - to worship Him; to love Him.
If mankind is NOT created in the image of God than we have NO responsibility to God.
So, who do we believe? Do we believe God’s Word or man’s word?
If we fully believe God’s Word than we are left with no other option than to believe and accept that ALL human life is valuable and is worthy of respect and care.
And, we should rejoice in that fact.
Why?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
But, from those passages of Scripture in Genesis, there is another truth which we must understand…
Sanctity of Life begins with the sanctity of marriage.
Sanctity of Life begins with the sanctity of marriage.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
God designed that children be the result of a man and a woman, who have been married.
If you do not hold marriage to be sacred and honorable then you are less likely to hold life to be sacred.
According to places such as the CDC and the New York Times…
Around 85% to 88% of women having abortions are unmarried
The rate of abortions per 1,000 live births is much higher for unmarried women (around 390-410) compared to married women (around 40-46)
What is marriage?
The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life.
Sanctity of Life is a life-long commitment.
Sanctity of Life is a life-long commitment.
Sanctity of Life does not end simply because of a live birth.
Spiritually, sanctity of life continues as we see to share the Gospel - the message of eternal life - with others.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
If we truly believe that life is valuable than we will take seriously the fact that every living soul will live eternally somewhere either enjoying eternal life in Heaven or eternal death in Hell!

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Parents, are you allowing your children to be more influenced by the world or by God’s Word?
Have a Bible time in your home.
Have Christ-honoring entertainment and music in your home.
Have your children in church. (Children’s Bible Hour, Master Clubs, etc.)
Have your children participate in Neighborhood Bible Time.
Have your children attend summer camp.
Give your children a Christ-honoring education. (South Charlotte Baptist Academy)
Our children are under attack! At the youngest ages…
They are being taught that abortion is a “super power.”
They are being taught that they can choose their gender.
They are being taught that they can “love” whomever they want.”
They are being taught that marriage is anything that they desire.
Because of this, there is much confusion in our world today.
Illustration: This past week, when Supreme Court Justice Alito asked an attorney what the definition of a boy and girl, the attorney responded, “We do not have a definition for the court.”
Illustration: Musician Jenny Lewis, for her 50th birthday, married her dog, a cockapoo named Bobby Rhubarb!
Our views and beliefs about life, marriage - about everything - must be shaped by God’s eternal Word!
