Main Thought:

This power that Paul talks about is directed toward us and it was the same power that was used to raise Christ from the dead! This power was demonstrated in Christ!
Consider the benefits of living in a land where this is common knowledge:
We have all heard that Jesus died, was buried and rose again!
Consider the disadvantages of the familiarity with this:
it has become to common for us, to regular - we have lost our wonder over the most wonderful and magnificent thing that has ever happened in the history of the world!
500 years ago no one had a complete cannon of Scripture!
We have one for less than the price of a meal at McDonald's!

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

The Resurrection

“raised him from the dead”

A. The Prophecy of the Resurrection

“according to the scriptures”
God does everything according to the Scriptures!
David Prophesied (OT)-

10  For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;

Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

11  Thou wilt shew me the path of life:

In thy presence is fulness of joy;

At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

How do we know that David was speaking of Christ?
Acts 2:25–32 KJV 1900
For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Jesus Prophesied He would be raised from he dead:
Matthew 16:21 KJV 1900
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

B. The Picture of the Resurrection

When Jonah was swallowed by a Whale
Matthew 12:38–40 KJV 1900
Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
When Abraham took Issac his son to offer him as a sacrifice
Hebrews 11:17–19 KJV 1900
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

C. The Proofs of the Resurrection

Not everyone believes in the resurrection. It is the one thing that differentiates Christianity from all other religions.
Acts 1:1–3 KJV 1900
THE former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

What were the “infallible proofs”?

The sealed and guarded tomb was empty
Matthew 27:66 KJV 1900
So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
2. The message of the angels
Matthew 28:5–6 KJV 1900
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
3. The testimony of Mary Magdalene
John 20:16–18 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
4. The Testimony of the linen clothes
John 20:5–7 KJV 1900
And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
5. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus
Luke 24:35 KJV 1900
And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
6. The testimony of the apostles
Matthew 28:16 KJV 1900
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
7. The 500 brethren
1 Corinthians 15:5–6 KJV 1900
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
8. The Gospel records
All 4 record it!

C. The Preaching of the Resurrection

“so we preach”
Its a Doctrine of our Faith
Acts 1:21–22 KJV 1900
Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
Its a Detail of our Witness
Peter at Pentecost
“whom God hath raised up”
Acts 2:22–24 KJV 1900
Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Acts 2:32 KJV 1900
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
2. Peter & John at the Temple - heal a lame man
Acts 3:11–15 KJV 1900
And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon’s, greatly wondering. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
3. Peter preaching to the Sanhedrin
Acts 4:8–10 KJV 1900
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

C. The Powerful Implications of the Resurrection

Ephesians 1:19–20 KJV 1900
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
In 1 Corinthians 15 verses 12-19 Paul gives us some problems we would face if Christ had not risen from the dead. But we have already proved that he has indeed risen! So these are things that because he is alive we can overcome!

1. Power to Witness:

1 Corinthians 15:14–15 KJV 1900
And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
Thank God our Preaching is not in vain
Romans 1:16 KJV 1900
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

2. Power over Sin

1 Corinthians 15:17 KJV 1900
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
Thank God we are not in our sin anymore!
1 Corinthians 1:34 - awake to righteousness and sin not...

3. Power over the grave

1 Corinthians 15:18 KJV 1900
Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
Where are our loved ones who have perished and were saved?
1 Thessalonians 4:13 KJV 1900
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
2 Corinthians 5:8 KJV 1900
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

4. Power over dead end dreams

1 Corinthians 15:19 KJV 1900
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
Why would Paul say that?
2 Timothy 3:12 KJV 1900
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Illustration: I was talking with a few colleges over lunch about their friend selling his business making 18 million dollars and moving to Florida- one man said “now that’s the way to do it”! No it’s not the way to do it.
But Paul said if there is no Resurrection then we would be missing out. Think of it. We are living our lives with a greater purpose a different desire. What a waste it would be if he had not risen from the dead.
Mark 8:36 KJV 1900
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
But as we have seen and as we believe He has risen!
1 Corinthians 15:20 KJV 1900
But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
