Church as we continue through Acts
Which is a book of the acts of those believers and the first church
We saw last what happens when those Apostles were obedient and waited for the Holy Spirit
We saw what happens when the power of the Holy Spirit is poured out, you begin to do things you are only able to do through the Power of God
This week we see what the Apostles have to offer people
I understand this may cause some confusion because last week I said they brought nothing to the table
We know and understand that you and I have nothing to offer
That our best we have to offer is as menstral rags
And this morning we see what we have to offer people only after we have experienced the Holy Spirit
Because lets be clear like last week with out the Power of the Holy Spirit you and I have nothing to offer people
This morning we pick up the account of the acts of the Apostles as they are going to the temple
1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. 2 And a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. 4 But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, “Look at us!” 5 And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.
These guys were walking into church
They were headed in to worship the Lord
They still participated in the Jewish rituals and gatherings at the Temple
They took notice of a man who as the scripture had been born lame
In that time period those people who were diabled were looked down upon
The only way he could get to the temple was to be carried so that he could beg for alms
An alm is money or other sorts of goods for those who are in need
An alm would be a charity for those in need
But church those believers who had the power of the Holy Spirit took notice
It difficult to say but I wonder how many times we don’t take notice of those who are in need
Not just a physical need but a spiritual need as well
I wonder how often we go about our days so busy and fixaided on accomplishing our tasks that we don’t take notice of people
Church this is not the first time we see Jesus or His believers become interrupted and it turns how that is what they should be doing
I can’t help but think we are to be interruptible
I mission driven and task oriented and I have to remind myself that sometimes I need to be interrupted so that I can be obedient to the Glory of God
And was is even more amazing is the times I have been interrupted some amazing and wonderful things have happened
Church we are to be highly tuned into the Holy Spirit
When we see where God is at work we go there
And we join Him in that work
And sometimes that work is helping someone jump their car or change a tire
Or sometimes it is praying for someone who is having a rough go of things
This man is expecting to get some charity so he can go about living his normal life
6 But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!”
Expect money or something physical
Peter looks at him and says I dont got money to give you
But
He could have said I don’t got money and left it at there but
See how that word changes the outcome
Sometimes we tell people I don’t have money to give you
Sometimes we tell them I don’t have the time to give you
Church we need to change that and that happens when we submit to the Power of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives
He was moving in Peter’s life so peter stops and says I don’t have money to give you but what I do have will forever change your life
What I do have I give it to you
What I do give you is Jesus and through Jesus be healed
Peter didn’t heal him
John didn’t heal him
Jesus did
Just like The Pastor doesn’t save you
The church doesn’t save you
Some book doesn’t save you
Church please understand and know in your head and in your heart Jesus is the one and only who can and will save you
The man is healed and he is jumping around
They go into the temple
Everyone inside the temple is shocked that the guy who has always been outside begging for charity is now inside the temple able to Worship the Lord
As a side question I wonder why no one thought to bring him inside
It was because he was considered unclean
It should be noted that everyone is welcome but Jesus won’t leave you the same as when you met Him
Only Jesus can do that
So Peter needs to say something
11 While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement. 12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk?
He asks them this question
Remember this is the same guy who a short time ago had denied even knowing Jesus and yet because of the Power of the Holy Spirit is now publically proclaiming Christ everywhere
Like a good Preacher He asks a question that he already knows the answer to
Why are you so shocked at the man who has been healed
Peter is going to explain how this man has been healed
13 “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. 14 “But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. 16 “And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.
Peter give another amazing message
He explains that the God of their fathers
Remember they were Jews as well
Jesus was a servant of His father because remember Jesus had to be about the Fathers Work
He was being obedient
Obedient to the point of death on the cross because of His great Love for us and obedience to the Father
Peter is reminding them of Jesus
Peter is always looking for an opportunity to point people back to Jesus
as should we
remember Peter was not an educated man
But
Peter had experienced Jesus personally
Peter had the Holy Spirit
Those enabled Peter to Speak
Church
Pauls says
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
Peter himself reminds us
15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
That you and I are to always be ready to preach and teach the word of God
That we don’t have to be formally educated
But we see this about the Men and Women of Scripture
They had experienced Jesus personally
They had the Holy Spirit
Church if you are saved meaning you have a personal relationshiip with Jesus
You have experienced Jesus personally
You have the same Spirit
This is what Peter was doing
Giving a reason for what happened
Peter tells them the Guy who denied at the Christ the Son of God and killed
Well God raised Him from the dead
And it is faith in Jesus that healed this man
Sort of like if people ask you what do you seem so happy all the time or why are you at peace when our world is falling apart
You can explain well because my hope is in Jesus
He is my savior
He saved from the junk in my life
I used to and you can explain your past and history
You can share how you found Jesus
You can share man Jesus is really showing me I need to love people
I must see them as He sees them
Which would give me a heart for the lost
And then church you can share how Jesus can save them
17 “And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. 18 “But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, 21 whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. 22 “Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed to everything He says to you. 23 ‘And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 “And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also announced these days. 25 “It is you who are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 “For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”
Peter gives them an invitation
Peter calls them to repent and return to a right relationship with God through faith in Christ
To be healed by faith in Jesus
To be healed from what their perversions their sins
To be healed to be refreshed
Church as we have seen that only comes through Faith in Christ
That Jesus was appointed as the Christ
The savior for them
They knew the Torah that God would raise up a prophet like Moses from their brothern
What did they do to most of the prophets of God they got ride of them because they didn’t like what they had to say even though those words would have given them life
Peter explains that those who does not heed the One Prophet Jesus
Who does not heed the words of the Messiah will be destroyed
Will spend eternity sperated from God the Fahter in hell
This is peter explaining salvation to them
I love the ending
For you
He makes it personal
For you God raised up Jesus and sent Him to you to bless you that you would turn from your wicked ways
See after you give your testimony
After you have shared the Gospel
We try to under the power of the Holy Spirit give them opportuinty to respond
To remind them to repent and believe
that those who do not repent and believe
Those who do not give heed to Jesus’s words will spend eternity in hell sperated from God
So church this morning
Peter and John didn’t have anything to give the begger
But they knew a guy
What I have to give you is nothing
But I know a guy
I know a guy who loves you
I know a guy who thinks you are to die for
I know a guy who desires to spend time with you
I know a guy who knows so much about you, he knows things about you you don’t even know
I know a guy who can save you and heal you up and give you times of refreshing
I would love for you to meet Him
Church as we call the band up for our time of invitation
Would you be obedient in how you respond this morning
If you don’t know Jesus we have people at the front who would love to introduce you to Him this morning
Maybe you just need to spend sometime in prayer at the alter
Maybe its you need to pray with some people bring them too
The alter is open
