Intro:

One of the hardest things after Salvation and before Major Effectiveness.
High School Answers - preconceived ideas
Plan out your life
The apostles had some preconceived ideas
Acts 1:6–11
“6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. 10 As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!””
Waiting & Authority

Wait!

v6 - Disciples version of are we there yet?

We don’t like to - why?

Negative
Selfishness
Pride
Positive
Our attention has to be on something
White Elephant
We respect those who can wait.
Patience's vs laziness
active mind set

Kept asking - when will you free Israel?

They wanted to use the new thing to stand up the old thing.

Mentality shift

How often have we been saved and yet our mentality hasn’t changed yet.
Lottery
Our preconceived ideas )High School has to be realigned to reality
The mentality that has to change who is the beneficiary of the new kingdom
12/11 disciples = new Israel
Who is the new Israel?

Waiting teaches us to wait well.

WAIT - Why Am I Talking
Best part of waiting
Gives a moment to see the beauty of seeing the moment - Hunting
Emotions catch up

Timing

Why is timing so important?
Because we assess our effort and the task to get to the end.
Jesus wants us to be fueled and directed by the Spirit.
Spiritual growth happens all the time
They wanted to use the new thing to stand up the old thing.
Let this not be true here.
Jesus responds…

v7-8 Who has authority (& responsibility) over what and why?

The Father has Authority

Don’t worry about it. Don’t pick times “Prophets”
AKA Jesus isn’t worried about - so take your cues from him.

But you will receive power to be my witnesses

You will be given explosive power to witnesses! - Dynamite
What does witnesses mean?
Car accident - tell them what you saw.
It doesn’t have to be tragic - Punky & I are the benefit of christ followers.
Heralds - Jesus is the risen king.
What do you know? Tell them that.
The disciples have authority to tell other people - Peter given the keys to the kingdom
The answer to mentality that has to change:
1) Who is apart of the new Israel | Today - where do you get started
They are from Galilee not Jerusalem
Wherever you are - is a good place to wait on God for a mentality change. Then Do what he said
After saying this he went up to heaven.
Proof their mentality hadn’t changed
It takes time
Probably the same amount of time but we view time differently.
Giving your preconceived ideas is hard but essential to walking in the power of the Holy Spirit
