Christ Came to Serve
Christ Came to Serve
Christ came as a servant to the Father.
John 6:38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.” (see John 4:34, 8:29)
In John 8:29, Jesus testified that He always did what was pleasing to the Father. This is why the Father proclaimed that His soul was pleased with Christ.
Though Christ is the Creator, He came to serve mankind.
Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.””
See Philippians 2:5-8...
The Humility and Compassion of Christ
The Humility and Compassion of Christ
Christ came in humility, not for popularity or applause.
Philippians 2:3–5 “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,”
Knowing that the Pharisees were seeking to destroy Him, He didn’t stay and argue or put on a show. He didn’t come to quarrel or yell at His opponents. He could have destroyed His enemies Himself, or called legions of angels to destroy them. That’s not what He did, though. He quietly withdrew. Look how He ministered to the sick. As He healed people, He told them not to make Him known. He wasn’t doing what He did to build a reputation or a following. Christ didn’t come the first time to rule and reign. He came to serve, suffer, and die for the very people who had sinned against Him.
Christ has compassion for the broken and weak who come to Him.
Reeds were used for many things in Biblical times. They were used as writing utensils, measuring rods, musical instruments, and numerous household items. There is one kind of reed that wasn’t used for any of these things: a bruised or broken one. Yet Jesus said that He won’t break the battered and bruised person who comes to Him. He will welcome, help, and strengthen them instead. A smoldering wick referred to a candle wick that was just about to go out. Jesus is saying here that even if you feel like you are at the end of your rope and have no strength left, you can come to Him and He will will not snuff you out. He will welcome and sustain you. He will light a fire in you that will never go out.
See Matthew 11:28-30...
Isaiah 57:15 “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.” (See John 6:37)
Christ’s Justice Will Prevail
Christ’s Justice Will Prevail
Christ proclaimed the way of salvation to Jew and Gentile.
Romans 1:16–17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””
Christ will reign in victory over all of His enemies.
