Lesson (A) – 1 Timothy 2:1-8

1 Timothy 2:1–8 ESV
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;

Main Points

Paul is promoting a peaceful environment for the gospel to flourish (v. 1-2)
The gospel is proclaimed to all! (v.3-4)
God is one (only, unique). There is only one way of salvation (v. 5-6)
Paul uses theology, christology, and soteriology to make a missional point.
Paul is a missionary first! His theology and how he reasons come first of all from his calling by God to reach the gentiles!

Paul as a Father. Qualities of a good mentor.

A good mentor is a promotor of peace. When you see the gospel flourish around a person—when people grow in their faith, when they come to Christ, when they begin to ask questions that further their growth rather than accuse—you may want to follow that person. Imitate them. Learn from them.
A good mentor is missional first. That means that their theology will grow through their love of the word but also through what they learn as they share the gospel with others. God’s mission is to reconcile the world to Himself. A good missionary and mentor will make sure that message is clear as they speak it.

Direct Application

We are commanded to pray for all people. Our political leaders specifically.

Lesson (B) 1 Timothy 2:8-15

1 Timothy 2:8–15 ESV
8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Main Points

Women would wear lewd and scandalous clothing in early church culture. Instead of being promiscuous, women should be modest in their dress and their character.
Sound familiar? Funny enough, the modern western fashion industry is almost the same. Often what we wear reflects our character.
Learning quietly is not the same as learning silently. Paul is reflecting on a character of “submissiveness.” (1 Peter 3:4). The opposite of submission is rebellion. Where a woman is submissive, the man is authoritative. Where the woman is quiet, the man speaks.
This is an often abused passage. This specifically refers to the church gathering. It reflects the creation order.
What is synechdeche?
It is a part that represents the whole. Contrary to what our culture believes, only women bear children. Paul is saying “childbirth” to refer to function.
It’s best to read Psalm 31 here. Women handle businesses and finances, engage and interact with the world, tend to families, etc. It’s not just “stay in the kitchen or tend to the children.”
Being “saved” is probably best translated “preserved.” When we act in the way we are supposed to we able to be preserved to the end.

Paul as a Father. Qualities of a good mentor.

Paul knows the right function of men and women in the home (Ephesians 5). A good mentor knows natural law.
Modest is the best dress—inside and out. That’s not just for women!
Find a mentor who believes Scripture’s presentation of the complementary roles of men and women.

Application

Modest is hottest.
In the church gathering there is an order that reflects creation order.
