Zechariah 10:1–12 NASB 2020

Ask for rain from the Lord at the time of the spring rain— The Lord who makes the storm winds; And He will give them showers of rain, vegetation in the field to each person. For the household idols speak deception, And the diviners see an illusion And tell deceitful dreams; They comfort in vain. Therefore the people wander like sheep, They are wretched because there is no shepherd. “My anger is kindled against the shepherds, And I will punish the male goats; For the Lord of armies has visited His flock, the house of Judah, And will make them like His majestic horse in battle. “From them will come the cornerstone, From them the tent peg, From them the bow of battle, From them every tyrant, all of them together. “And they will be like warriors, Trampling down the enemy in the mud of the streets in battle; And they will fight, because the Lord will be with them; And the riders on horses will be put to shame. “And I will strengthen the house of Judah, And I will save the house of Joseph, And I will bring them back, Because I have had compassion on them; And they will be as though I had not rejected them, For I am the Lord their God and I will answer them. “Ephraim will be like a warrior, And their heart will be joyful as if from wine; Indeed, their children will see it and be joyful, Their heart will rejoice in the Lord. “I will whistle for them and gather them together, For I have redeemed them; And they will be as numerous as they were before. “When I scatter them among the peoples, They will remember Me in distant countries, And they with their children will live and come back. “I will bring them back from the land of Egypt And gather them from Assyria; And I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon Until no room can be found for them. “And they will pass through the sea of distress And He will strike the waves in the sea, So that all the depths of the Nile will dry up; And the pride of Assyria will be brought down, And the scepter of Egypt will depart. “And I will strengthen them in the Lord, And in His name they will walk,” declares the Lord.

  What is the Cornerstone? Zech 10:1-12

The postexilic Prophet Zechariah was a Levite born in Babylon (Neh12:1, Neh12:16). He was the son of Berekiah and the grandson of Iddo the priest (Zec1:1). Ezra and Nehemiah referred to him as “a descendant of Iddo” (Ezr5:1; Ezr6:14; cf. Neh12:4, Neh12:16), implying perhaps that his father had died young and Zechariah became the successor of his grandfather (cf. Neh12:4, Neh12:16). So, like Jeremiah and Ezekiel before him, Zechariah was both a prophet and a priest. Zechariah’s name, which he shared with about 30 other men in the Old Testament, means “Yahweh (NIV, ‘the Lord’) remembers.”

Zechariah was a contemporary of Haggai the prophet, Zerubbabel the governor, and Joshua the high priest (Ezr5:1-2; Zec3:1; Zec4:6; Zec6:11). Zechariah returned to Jerusalem from Babylon with almost 50,000 other Jewish exiles. He was probably a relatively young man at the beginning of his prophetic ministry (cf. Date

When the Babylonian Empire fell to the Persian Empire (539 b.c.), Cyrus the Great decreed that the Jews could return to Jerusalem to rebuild their temple (Ezr1:2-4; cf. Isa44:28). However, only a small minority of about 50,000 Jews (including Haggai and Zechariah) returned under the leadership of Zerubbabel the governor and Joshua the high priest (Ezr2:1-70).

Structure

The style of Zechariah is characterized by epitome and also much figurative language. Zechariah showed much dependence on his predecessors and summarized many of their prophetic themes. However, he also displayed creative individuality of both thought and expression as the Spirit of God guided the recording of the divine revelation communicated to him.

Zechariah’s prophetic book embraces several types of literary genres. Following the opening exhortation (call to repentance, Zec1:2-6), Zechariah gave a series of eight prophetic dream-visions he saw in a single night (1:7-6:8). These visions are in the form of apocalyptic (“revelatory”) literature — highly figurative descriptions of eschatological encouragement. Chapters 9-14 are composed of two prophetic oracles (see comments on Zec9:1), which consist primarily of promises of Israel’s future salvation. Purpose

In an often-quoted statement, George L. Robinson has called the Book of Zechariah “the most messianic, the most truly apocalyptic and eschatological of all the writings of the Old Testament” (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1956, 5:3136). The messianic emphasis of Zechariah accounts for its frequent citation by New Testament authors. Thank You YHWH for teaching us that You are our Cornerstone on which our redemption lies.
