(Ordination Service Message)
Primary Text
Primary Text
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Big Idea
Big Idea
Faithful study and diligent preparation are the spiritual “measurements” that allow a minister to proclaim the Word accurately—without confusion, correction, or compromise.
I. Ordination Is a Call to Stewardship, Not Speed
I. Ordination Is a Call to Stewardship, Not Speed
Paul describes the minister as a workman
A workman is judged by accuracy, not excitement
Ordination places one under divine accountability
II. Measuring Comes Before Cutting
II. Measuring Comes Before Cutting
Illustration:
“Measure twice, cut once”
Cutting before measuring causes waste and damage
Preaching before studying creates confusion
Spiritual Principle:
Measure deeply in study so you don’t have to correct publicly in preaching
III. Rightly Dividing Requires Diligent Study
III. Rightly Dividing Requires Diligent Study
“Study” implies effort, preparation, and discipline
Supporting Scriptures:
Acts 17:11
Ezra 7:10
James 3:1
IV. Cutting Too Soon Creates the Need to Correct Later
IV. Cutting Too Soon Creates the Need to Correct Later
Poor preparation leads to:
Retractions
Clarifications
Confusion
A faithful workman “needeth not to be ashamed”
V. Ordination Is a Charge to Faithfulness, Not Innovation
V. Ordination Is a Charge to Faithfulness, Not Innovation
We do not invent truth
We do not improve Scripture
We rightly divide what God has already spoken
Closing Charge
Closing Charge
Measure the text.
Measure the context.
Measure yourself.
Then cut with confidence.

Ordination Service Manuscript
Beloved, today is a sacred moment.
Ordination moments are not loud moments—they are weighty moments.
They are not simply about celebration; they are about consecration.
Today, we are not just recognizing a gift.
We are affirming a calling.
We are not crowning talent—we are commissioning trust.
The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy and says:
“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Paul uses a very intentional word: workman.
Not performer.
Not personality.
Not celebrity.
A workman.
Because ministry begins with careful labor long before public proclamation.
I. Ministry Begins in the Quiet Place of Measurement
I. Ministry Begins in the Quiet Place of Measurement
Before anything is ever cut, it must first be measured.
Anyone familiar with construction understands this principle:
Measure twice, cut once.
The cutting is visible.
The measuring is hidden.
But the quality of the cut depends entirely on the accuracy of the measurement.
In ministry:
Preaching is the cut
Study is the measurement
Paul tells Timothy: measure well—not to impress people, but to be approved by God.
II. Study Is an Act of Love
II. Study Is an Act of Love
“Study,” Paul says.
Study is not merely academic—it is pastoral.
Careless handling of Scripture does not just create poor sermons;
it creates confused and wounded people.
Faithful study says:
“I care enough about you not to guess.”
And when a minister measures carefully in study, he gains confidence—not arrogance, but assurance.
III. Rightly Dividing Protects the Minister from Shame
III. Rightly Dividing Protects the Minister from Shame
Paul says the faithful workman “needeth not to be ashamed.”
Why?
Because accuracy removes embarrassment.
Diligence eliminates contradiction.
Truth, when handled correctly, stands on its own.
When study is shallow, correction becomes necessary.
But when preparation is faithful, proclamation is secure.
IV. Ordination Is Responsibility, Not Permission
IV. Ordination Is Responsibility, Not Permission
Today, you are being entrusted with something sacred.
You are not called to invent truth.
You are not called to improve Scripture.
You are called to divide it correctly.
And when you measure faithfully,
you will cut confidently.
Final Charge
Final Charge
So today, I charge you:
Measure the text before you preach it.
Measure the context before you apply it.
Measure yourself before you declare it.
Because when you measure well in private,
you will cut clean in public.
And when you cut clean,
the people of God will be built—not bruised.
Closing Encouragement
Closing Encouragement
This charge is not meant to intimidate you.
It is meant to steady you.
The same God who called you
will sustain you.
The same Spirit who inspired the Word
will guide you as you handle it.
So take your time.
Do the work.
Measure well.
Amen.
If you want next:
A one-page ordination charge
A shortened version
Or the ordinand’s name woven in
Just say the word.
