When God’s Presence Meets Obedient Hands

📖 Haggai 2:1–9 (NKJV)

ENGAGING INTRODUCTION

Church, last was a moment of alignment.
God spoke to us the same way He spoke through the prophet Haggai—
not harshly, not angrily—
but honestly.
He said;
“Consider your ways.”
We didn’t hear that as condemnation.
We heard it as invitation.
An invitation to reorder priorities.
An invitation to put God’s house back in first place
not just a building, but His presence, His priority, His place in our lives.
Last week we learned something sobering and freeing at the same time:
Spiritual drought doesn’t always come from rebellion.
But it quite often comes from misalignment.
We read that;
Paneled houses were finished.
Lives were busy.
Effort was high.
But satisfaction was low.
Not because God had left—
but because God had been moved down the list.
So the Lord said,
“Consider your ways.”
And the turning point wasn’t a big emotional thing.
It was simple obedience.
The people didn’t just agree with the Word.
They acted on it.
They stopped saying, “The time has not yet come.”
They laid down delay.
They picked up tools.
They moved from intention to action.
And Scripture says something powerful happened:
“The Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel… and the spirit of Joshua… and the spirit of all the remnant of the people.”
Here’s what you need to understand as we step into today:
👉 God never stirs His people without drawing near Himself.
James 4:7–8 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
So if last week was about putting God first,
this week is about what happens next.
Because obedience doesn’t end the story—
it opens the door.
And church, I don’t know how long the Lord will have us in Haggai.
But whether we return to this text again or not,
this word demands an answer now.
God has spoken.
Priorities have been addressed.
Obedience has begun.
The only questions left are:
What kind of house are we going to build from here?
What part are you going to play in that?
Belong | Believe | Become
The become part doesn’t mean afar off it actually begins with belonging and believing. You can become a volunteer, a servant of the Living God
You can become a tither and sow into the Kingdom of God
You can

TRANSITION TO THE TEXT

When God’s house comes first,
God doesn’t stay distant—
He draws near.
That’s where Haggai chapter 2 begins.

READ THE TEXT

📖 Haggai 2:4–5 (NKJV)
Haggai 2:4–5 NKJV
4 Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the Lord; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the Lord of hosts. 5According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!’
“Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel… be strong, Joshua… be strong, all you people of the land… and work; for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts… My Spirit remains among you; do not fear.”
This is no longer correction.
This is confirmation.

BIG IDEA / ROAD MAP

Here’s the truth I want you to carry today:
When God comes first, God comes near.
And when God is near, strength returns and glory follows.
Last week answered the question:
“What needs to change?”
Today answers the question:
“What happens when we do?”

POINT 1 — OBEDIENCE INVITES GOD’S PRESENCE AND AVENGES DISOBEDIENCE

When the people obeyed, they weren’t just resuming construction.
They were declaring war on what had ruled them.
Delay.
Fear.
Self-priority.
Excuses.
And God responds—not with shame—but with presence.
“Work… for I am with you.”
Now listen to this through the lens of the New Covenant.
📖 2 Corinthians 10:4–6 (NKJV)
2 Corinthians 10:4–6 NKJV
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds…
…and being ready to punish or avenge all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”
Catch the order.
👉 Obedience doesn’t just replace disobedience—
it avenges it.
Some strongholds don’t fall because you shouted louder.
They fall because you finally obeyed.
Every act of obedience is an act of spiritual warfare.
When you obey:
Fear loses authority
Delay loses leverage
Old habits begin to die
And here’s the grace of God:
He doesn’t wait for obedience to be finished or perfect.
He waits for obedience to be in motion.
The moment obedience begins, heaven backs it with presence.
You might not feel it but Gods presence isnt measured by our feelings.
“Work… for I am with you.”
When he slew Goliath Davids obedience is what manifested the presence of God, it was in his actions and the victory it was known that God was indeed with him.
And so obedience makes room for God to move,
and God’s presence finishes what obedience starts.
Its what will carry you through to completion.
Philippians 1:6 NKJV
6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
And here’s where some of us get stuck.
Because once obedience is in motion…
once the work has begun…
once the stronghold starts to crack…
That’s often when the weight hits and the enemy turns up his efforts.
The adrenaline fades.
The resistance increases.
The cost becomes real.
And the question shifts from
“Will I obey?”
to
“Do I have the strength to keep going?”
That’s why God doesn’t just promise His presence—
He releases His strength.
Because Scripture shows us the order.
📖 James 4:7–8 (NKJV)
“Therefore submit to God.
Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
Notice what James doesn’t say.
He doesn’t say feel near.
He doesn’t say try harder.
He says submit.
Because obedience may start the work…
but only God’s presence can sustain it.
Which leads us to this truth:
👉 God’s presence doesn’t just confront disobedience—
it restores strength to finish what obedience began.

POINT 2 — GOD’S PRESENCE RESTORES STRENGTH

Three times God says it:
“Be strong… be strong… be strong.”
Why?
Because obedience can be exhausting.
Lets be honest about this;
You said yes—and resistance showed up.
You aligned—and it didn’t instantly get easier.
You stepped back into order—and now you feel the weight.
But listen carefully:
👉 God never asks for strength before He gives His presence.
He doesn’t say, “Be strong so I’ll be with you.”
He says, “I am with you—therefore be strong.”
And then He says something powerful:
“My Spirit remains among you.”
Not visits.
Not passes through.
Remains. This is what we have in Jesus!
He said I will make my dwelling place in your heart.
Now let me be clear about something.
When God says, “Be strong,”
He is not talking about personality.
He is not talking about volume.
He is not talking about being harsh or rigid.
Biblical strength is not loud faith.
It’s anchored faith.
God is not looking for diluted beliefs—
He is looking for resolved people.
So what does strength actually look like?

1. Strength Means We Do Not Dilute Obedience

Strength says,
“If God said it, I’ll do it—even when it’s inconvenient.”
Not partial obedience.
Not delayed obedience.
Not obedience with conditions.
Strength obeys without negotiating.
Because delayed obedience doesn’t just slow progress—
it weakens trust.

2. Strength Means We Do Not Dilute Holiness, Morality, and Purity

Strength doesn’t redefine holiness to stay comfortable.
It doesn’t lower the standard to stay accepted.
Purity is not outdated.
Holiness is not extreme.
They are protective.
God’s standards don’t restrict life—
they preserve it.
Strength says,
“I will live set apart, not because I’m better—
but because I belong.”

3. Strength Means We Do Not Dilute God’s Word with Human Philosophy or Agendas

Strength does not bend Scripture to fit culture.
It doesn’t edit the Word to match the moment.
We don’t read the Bible through the lens of politics.
We don’t read it through the lens of popular opinion.
We allow the Word of God to stand on its own authority.
Because the Word doesn’t need updating—
it needs obeying.

4. Strength Means We Do Not Dilute God’s Commandments

Strength doesn’t argue with what God commands.
It doesn’t explain it away.
It doesn’t soften it to make it easier to swallow.
Strength trusts that God knows what leads to life.
And when we walk in His commands,
we don’t lose freedom—
we find it.
So when God says, “Be strong,”
He is saying:
“Stand firm in obedience.
Stand firm in holiness.
Stand firm in truth.
Stand firm in what I have spoken.”
Because diluted faith cannot sustain a holy work.
But a people strengthened by God’s presence
can build something that lasts.
And once God establishes strength in His people,
He doesn’t stop there.
He lifts their eyes again—
to purpose,
to promise,
to glory.

POINT 3 — THIS HOUSE WILL CARRY GREATER GLORY

Now God lifts their eyes beyond the present moment.
📖 Haggai 2:9 (NKJV)
“The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former…”
Some remembered Solomon’s temple.
Gold. Grandeur. Glory.
And this new work looked smaller.
Slower.
Less impressive.
But God says:
Don’t measure this by memory.
Measure it by My promise.
This is not nostalgia revival.
This is forward glory.
Not louder—but deeper.
Not shinier—but heavier.
Not built on hype—but on holiness.
God isn’t restoring what was.
He’s releasing what’s been reserved.
This is about:
Homes filled with peace
Children grounded in faith
Lives transformed and prosperous
A church known for presence, not performance.
The latter glory is not cosmetic.
It’s covenantal.

CHRIST-CENTERED CLIMAX

Church, the greatest glory didn’t come through stone and wood.
Jesus said:
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
The true temple is the body of Christ.
And through Christ—the Spirit now dwells in us.
So when you put God first,
you dont just host His presence—
👉 You carry it.

REFLECTION & RESPONSE

I want to speak to the builders in the room.
Do I have any Kingdom Builders with me today?
Builders of homes.
Builders of marriages.
Builders of ministries.
Builders of altars - altars in the Market Place, altars in Education, altars in Creative Arts, altars in Goverment.
God says:
“Be strong.
And work.
For I am with you.”
Not alone.
No longer afraid.
Not burned out.
Strong—because He is near.

COMMISSIONING PRAYER

Lord, we thank You that obedience opened the door to Your presence.
We receive Your strength.
We reject fear.
We commit to the work—not striving, but trusting.
Let this house carry greater glory.
Let our homes carry peace.
Let our lives reflect Your presence.
We will be strong.
We will build.
Because You are with us.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

MEMORABLE CONCLUSION

God did not confront us to leave us uncertain.
He did not realign us to abandon us halfway through the work.
He spoke because He intends to stay.
So I want to declare this:
This house does not drift anymore.
This house does not delay anymore.
This house does not build without His presence.
Paneled houses fade.
Busy lives exhaust.
But a house filled with His presence
outlives generations.
If you believe that can you say Amen!?
