Jehovah Nissi — The Lord Is My Banner
“Living Under God’s Authority and Victory”
Primary Text: Exodus 17:8–16 (ESV)
“Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD Is My Banner.” (v.15)
INTRODUCTION: EVERY LIFE FLIES A BANNER (8 minutes)
In ancient times, a banner identified:
Who you belonged to
Who you followed
Who you fought for
Who protected you
A banner was not decoration — it was identity and authority.
Every person lives under a banner.
Every family lives under a banner.
Every church lives under a banner.
The question is not do you have one —
the question is whose banner are you under?
I. THE CONTEXT: A BATTLE IS FORCED, NOT CHOSEN (Exodus 17:8) (10 minutes)
“Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.”
Israel didn’t provoke the fight.
They didn’t plan the battle.
They were attacked.
Pastoral Insight
Some of the battles in your life are not because you did something wrong.
They are because you are moving forward.
The enemy resists progress.
Teaching Aid
“Opposition is often confirmation you’re on the right path.”
II. GOD FIGHTS WHILE HIS PEOPLE DEPEND (Exodus 17:9–11) (12 minutes)
Moses stands on the hill with the staff raised.
As long as his hands are up, Israel prevails.
When his hands fall, the enemy gains ground.
This is not magic.
It is dependence.
Teaching Aid
“Victory flows from posture before it flows to progress.”
The raised staff represents:
Submission to God
Trust in God’s power
Alignment with God’s authority
Illustration: The Power Source
A lamp shines only while connected.
Disconnect it — darkness follows.
Victory is not effort.
Victory is connection.
III. GOD NEVER INTENDED US TO FIGHT ALONE (Exodus 17:12) (10 minutes)
Moses grows weary.
Aaron and Hur hold his hands up.
Pastoral Insight
God intentionally allows weariness so we learn community dependence.
We need:
Intercession
Accountability
Support
Teaching Aid
“Isolation weakens victory; unity sustains it.”
IV. JEHOVAH NISSI: GOD HIMSELF IS THE BANNER (Exodus 17:15–16) (10 minutes)
Moses doesn’t name the altar:
“The Lord gave victory”
He names it:
“The LORD Is My Banner.”
The banner isn’t success.
The banner isn’t strength.
The banner is God Himself.
Illustration: Military Banner
Soldiers rallied not to a weapon, but to the banner.
When the banner stood, hope stood.
God says:
“Stand under Me.”
V. JESUS: OUR BANNER LIFTED HIGH (8 minutes)
John 12:32:
“And I, when I am lifted up… will draw all people to myself.”
The cross becomes our banner.
Not comfort.
Not power.
Not control.
Under the cross:
We find victory
We find identity
We find authority
VI. WHY WE LOSE BATTLES (5 minutes)
Fighting in our own strength
Lowered spiritual posture
Fighting alone
Forgetting who we belong to
Romans 8:37:
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
VII. EXTENDED PRAYER MINISTRY & ALTAR CALL (15 minutes)
