Jehovah Jireh — The Lord Will Provide
“Seeing God Before Receiving the Provision”
Primary Text: Genesis 22:1–14 (ESV)
“So Abraham called the name of that place, ‘The LORD will provide.’” (v.14)
INTRODUCTION: WHEN NEED BRINGS US TO GOD (8 minutes)
Most of us encounter God as Jehovah Jireh when we are in need.
A financial need.
A family need.
A health need.
A decision we don’t know how to make.
And often, our prayers sound like this:
“Lord, I need You to provide.”
But before God provides what Abraham needs,
He reveals who He is.
Provision is never just about supply.
Provision is about trust.
I. THE CONTEXT: GOD TESTS WHAT HE HAS PROMISED (Genesis 22:1–2) (10 minutes)
“After these things God tested Abraham…”
God does not tempt — but He tests.
This test strikes at the very heart of the promise.
Isaac is not just Abraham’s son — he is the fulfillment of God’s word.
Pastoral Insight
God will sometimes test the very thing He gave you —
not to take it away,
but to see whether you trust the gift or the Giver.
Teaching Aid
“A test reveals what we truly rely on.”
II. OBEDIENCE BEFORE UNDERSTANDING (Genesis 22:3–5) (10 minutes)
Abraham rises early.
No argument.
No delay.
No negotiation.
“So Abraham rose early in the morning…”
Faith does not require explanation before obedience.
Illustration: Walking in the Dark
Sometimes God gives just enough light for the next step —
not the whole path.
Hebrews 11:17–19 tells us Abraham believed God could raise the dead.
Faith trusts God with the outcome.
III. THE LORD WHO SEES (Genesis 22:6–8) (10 minutes)
Isaac asks:
“Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
Abraham answers:
“God will provide for himself the lamb.”
The Hebrew word Jireh means “to see”.
Teaching Aid
“God provides because God sees.”
Before you were aware of the need,
God already saw it.
Illustration: A Parent Watching a Child
A child doesn’t see danger.
A parent does.
God’s provision flows from His perspective.
IV. PROVISION APPEARS AT THE POINT OF SURRENDER (Genesis 22:9–13) (10 minutes)
The ram appears after the altar is built.
After the knife is raised.
After surrender is complete.
God rarely provides in advance —
He provides on time.
Pastoral Insight
Delayed provision is not denial.
It is often preparation.
V. JEHOVAH JIREH IS A COVENANT NAME (Genesis 22:14) (7 minutes)
“So Abraham called the name of that place, ‘The LORD will provide.’”
This wasn’t just a moment —
it was a revelation of God’s nature.
God is not a one-time provider.
He is Jehovah Jireh.
Philippians 4:19:
“My God will supply every need of yours…”
VI. JESUS: GOD’S ULTIMATE PROVISION (8 minutes)
On the same mountain range, centuries later,
another Father would offer His Son.
Romans 8:32:
“He who did not spare his own Son… how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”
Jesus is not God’s response to need —
He is God’s provision before we ever asked.
VII. EXTENDED PRAYER MINISTRY & ALTAR CALL (15 minutes)
Invitation
Some of you are standing on the mountain right now.
You don’t see the ram.
You don’t know the outcome.
God is inviting you to trust Him again.

You see what we cannot see.
You know what we do not know.

Matthew 6:33:
“Seek first the kingdom of God… and all these things will be added to you.”
