Jehovah — The Eternal “I AM”
“Meeting God Before We Need Anything”
Primary Text: Exodus 3:1–15 (ESV)
INTRODUCTION: WE ALL WANT A GOD WHO ACTS (8 minutes)
Most of us come to God because we need something.
We need help.
We need healing.
We need provision.
We need direction.
There is nothing wrong with that — God invites us to come.
But before God answers Moses’ request,
before He sends him to Pharaoh,
before He performs miracles…
God introduces Himself.
Not by title.
Not by resume.
But by name.
And that name becomes the foundation for everything else Moses will ever experience with God.
I. THE HOLY CONTEXT OF GOD’S SELF-REVELATION (Exodus 3:1–6) (10 minutes)
Moses is not in a sanctuary.
He is in the wilderness.
God often reveals Himself when life feels ordinary or barren.
The bush is burning, but not consumed.
Pastoral Insight
Some of you feel like you’re in a wilderness season.
But the fact that you are not consumed means God is sustaining you — even when you don’t recognize His presence yet.
God tells Moses:
“Take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
Teaching Aid
“Holy ground is not about location — it’s about God’s presence.”
II. GOD’S NAME: I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:13–14) (12 minutes)
When Moses asks God His name, God says:
“I AM WHO I AM.”
This name — Yahweh / Jehovah — means:
Self-existent
Eternal
Unchanging
Fully sufficient
God is not defined by:
Our need
Our season
Our crisis
Pastoral Moment
Some of us have unknowingly tried to make God smaller than He is.
We reduce Him to the role we need Him to play.
But God refuses to be managed.
III. WHY THIS NAME COMES BEFORE ALL OTHERS (10 minutes)
Before God is:
Healer
Provider
Peace
Shepherd
He is I AM.
Illustration: The Anchor
An anchor doesn’t stop the storm.
It keeps you from drifting.
Jehovah does not promise a storm-free life.
He promises unchanging presence.
Malachi 3:6:
“For I the LORD do not change.”
IV. JESUS: THE LIVING I AM (John 8:58) (10 minutes)
Jesus declares:
“Before Abraham was, I AM.”
This is why they tried to stone Him.
He wasn’t speaking metaphorically.
He was revealing identity.
In Jesus:
God steps into time
Eternity touches humanity
The I AM becomes accessible
Pastoral Application
If you have Jesus, you are never without God’s presence — even when you feel alone.
V. COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS OF GOD’S NAME (5 minutes)
God is not waiting to become what you need
God is not limited by your past
God is not exhausted by your prayers
Isaiah 40:28:
“The LORD is the everlasting God… He does not faint or grow weary.”
VI. EXTENDED PRAYER MINISTRY & ALTAR CALL (15 minutes)
Invitation to Stillness
Church, before we ask God to do anything,
He invites us to know Him.
I want to invite you to stand or come forward as you feel led.
Prayer Focuses
Releasing anxiety about the future
Letting go of control
Resting in God’s unchanging nature
Re-centering faith in who God is
Guided Prayer (Pastoral, Slow)
“Lord, You are the I AM.
You are present.
You are sufficient.
You are near.
We release the need to control outcomes.
We release fear of what hasn’t happened yet.
We trust You — not because of what You do —
but because of who You are.”
(Allow silence.)
Closing Scripture
Hebrews 13:8:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
