Jesus, Founder and Perfecter of Our Faith

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Like them, we must throw off everything that hinders (ESV, ‘every weight’ [ongkon panta]).27 This could include things that may not be sinful in themselves, but which slow down or prevent continuance in the Christian life, such as habits, friendships, ambitions and attachments. We are also to put aside the sin that so easily entangles, which is another general expression that could apply to a range of attitudes and behaviours (ESV, ‘sin which clings so closely’).28 The sin the author has in mind is not specifically apostasy, but anything that constricts or prevents the believer from finishing the race. Some argue that the sin is either a closer definition or literal equivalent of everything that hinders, but sin implies deliberate rebellion against the will of God (3:12–13; 10:26). Hindrances only become sinful when they are retained at the expense of spiritual progress.

One sin the soul’s ruin:—There was but one crack in the lantern, and the wind has found it out and blown out the candle. How great a mischief one unguarded point of character may cause us! (C. H. Spurgeon.) The race that is set before us.—

2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

1 Corinthians 9:24 “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.”
1 Corinthians 9:25 “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.”
1 Corinthians 9:26–27 “So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
