STRENGTH BEFORE INCREASE

Primary Text: Isaiah 54:2–3 (CSB)

OPENING — ORIENTING THE HEART (2 minutes)

Most of us love the idea of increase.
We pray for more opportunity. More influence. More growth. More blessing.
And those prayers aren’t wrong.
But Scripture teaches us something that often challenges our instincts:
God does not increase what He has not first strengthened.
If God gives increase without strength, the increase becomes a burden instead of a blessing.
So in this teaching, I want to slow us down and show you why strength always comes before expansion— and how God is strengthening us on purpose right now.

SETTING THE CONTEXT — WHY ISAIAH 54 MATTERS (3 minutes)

Isaiah 54 comes after Isaiah 53.
That’s important.
Isaiah 53 speaks about suffering, sacrifice, and redemption. Isaiah 54 speaks to people who have already been restored.
So this chapter is not written to broken people trying to get saved. It’s written to restored people preparing for what comes next.
And God’s first word to restored people is not: “Relax.” “Celebrate.” “Stay where you are.”
It’s: “Prepare.”
Isaiah 54:2–3 says:
“Enlarge the site of your tent… lengthen your ropes… and drive your pegs deep.”
Notice the order.
God gives commands before He gives promises.
Preparation first. Expansion later.
That tells us something important:
Increase is promised. Strength is required.

THE BIG IDEA — ANCHORING THE TEACHING (1 minute)

Here’s the governing truth for this entire message:
God does not increase what He has not first strengthened.
Every time God expands someone’s life, ministry, influence, or responsibility, He strengthens something first.
Because strength is what keeps increase from destroying us.

UNDERSTANDING THE “STAKES” (4 minutes)

In ancient times, tents were held up by stakes.
Those stakes determined:
how much weight the tent could carry
how much wind it could withstand
how far the tent could stretch
A tent could look impressive on the outside, but weak stakes meant eventual collapse.
Spiritually, the same principle applies.
Your capacity is limited by what you are anchored to.
Colossians 2:6–7 says:
“Continue to live in Him, being rooted and built up in Him…”
Notice the order: Rooted first. Built up second.
God never builds up what is not first rooted.
Roots are hidden. They grow underground. They form quietly.
But they determine whether growth lasts.

WHY GOD VALUES STRENGTH OVER SPEED (4 minutes)

We live in a culture that celebrates speed.
Fast results. Quick success. Instant breakthroughs.
We want microwave growth in a slow-cooking kingdom.
But God values:
faithfulness
depth
obedience
Luke 16:10 tells us:
“Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much.”
God tests strength before He releases increase.
Why?
Because increase without strength produces:
burnout
pride
instability
shallow faith
Psalm 127:1 reminds us:
“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.”
God would rather slow you down than watch you fall apart later.
Slowing down is often protection, not punishment.

WHERE GOD STRENGTHENS US FIRST (5 minutes)

So where does God usually begin strengthening us?

1. Our Walk With God

Not emotional moments—daily obedience.
Prayer that continues when feelings fade. Scripture that forms us, not just informs us.
Emotions may ignite faith, but disciplines sustain it.
God strengthens roots through consistency.

2. Our Character

Growth exposes weakness. Pressure reveals foundation.
God is far more concerned with: who we are becoming than how fast we are growing.
If character isn’t strengthened, increase magnifies immaturity.
God strengthens character before He entrusts influence.

3. Our Commitments

Consistency is spiritual strength.
Showing up. Staying planted. Finishing what we start.
Faithfulness in small things prepares us for greater responsibility.
Often, God is not withholding increase— He’s strengthening faithfulness.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR US RIGHT NOW (VISION CONNECTION) (2 minutes)

As a church, we believe God is preparing us for increase.
But not reckless increase. Not unsustainable growth.
He is strengthening us:
spiritually
relationally
structurally
So when growth comes, we don’t just expand— we endure.
This season is not about rushing forward. It’s about being ready to move forward.

PERSONAL REFLECTION — SLOW AND INTENTIONAL (2 minutes)

Let me invite you to pause and reflect.
Where do I need strengthening? What area of my life is God securing? What small act of faithfulness is He asking of me right now?
Growth doesn’t begin with more.
It begins with stronger.

CLOSING PRAYER (1 minute)

Let’s pray together.
“Lord, strengthen what You’re building in me. Anchor my life in You. Deepen my roots. And prepare me for what You are about to entrust to me. Amen.”

FINAL LINE (OPTIONAL TAG)

What God strengthens, He can trust with increase.
