Romans 3:21-24 - The Way Out

しかし今朝、パウロは光をつけて、私たちに脱出の道を示します。

診断:出口はない

パウロの診断は徹底的で包括的でした。彼は、すべての不敬虔に対して神の怒りが現されることを示すことから始めました(ローマ1:18)。彼は人類の下降を追跡しました。私たちが神の真理を偽りと交換し、創造主ではなく被造物に仕えるようになった過程です。

それからパウロは、私たちが言い訳として使うすべてのものを打ち砕きました。他人を裁く道徳的に優れた人はどうでしょうか。他人を裁くことは私たちを義にしないので、同じ立場です(ローマ2:1)。律法を持ち、聖書を知っている人はどうでしょうか。知識を持つことは従順と同じではなく、生涯にわたる完全な従順だけが重要です(ローマ2:12-13)。宗教的特権を信頼している人はどうでしょうか。彼らは誇っているその律法を破っています。

パウロの結論は絶対的です。「義人はいない。一人もいない」(ローマ3:10)。律法は私たちに罪を示し、言い訳をやめさせるために存在します(ローマ3:19-20)。たとえ今日から完璧にすべてをできたとしても、私たちはすでに神の律法を破った壊れた人間です。

私たちは逃げ道のない深く暗い穴の底にいます。

転換点:しかし今

ここで3章21節が大きな変化をもたらします。「しかし今...」この二つの言葉が劇的な転換を示します。パウロは私たちの致命的な霊的状態の診断を完了しました。今、彼は治療法を明らかにします。

「しかし今、律法とは別に、神の義が示されました。それは律法と預言者によって証しされています」(ローマ3:21)。神の怒りは1章18節で現されました。今、神の義が3章21節で現されます。

神の義は「律法とは別に」来ることに注目してください。律法は病気を診断しましたが、治療法を提供することはできませんでした。律法は神の基準、つまり神の性質と聖さの平面的な姿を示しましたが、私たちがそれに達することができないままにしました。

脱出の道:イエス・キリストへの信仰

パウロは続けます。「イエス・キリストを信じる信仰による神の義は、すべて信じる人のためです。区別はありません」(ローマ3:22)。私たちの穴に投げ込まれたロープは、信じるすべての人が使えます。規則を守る人のためでも、宗教的な階段を登る人のためでも、秘密の知識を持つ人のためでもありません。

神は、イエス・キリストへの信仰だけを通して、ご自分の義を与えてくださいます。

「すべて」という言葉が22節から24節に繰り返し現れます。すべての人が罪を犯し、神の栄光に達していません。すべての人が、キリスト・イエスによる贖いを通して、恵みにより、賜物として義と宣言されます。

この例えを考えてください。慶良間諸島に向かう船が途中で沈んだと想像してください。ある人は5分間泳いで沈みます。別の人は10分間続きます。誰かは30分続くかもしれません。おそらく1人は1時間以上泳いで、ほぼ岸が見えます。しかし、誰が生きて岸に着きますか。誰もいません。5分続いた人も1時間続いた人も、同じ運命を共有します。

これが、神が曲線で評価しない理由です。どれだけ良いことができても、私たちは罪を犯します。私たちは神の基準に達しません。私たちは沈みます。神は言います。「わたしは律法とは別に、全く違うもの、信仰に基づいて、わたしの義をあなたに与えます。」

賜物:義認と贖い

24節は光を完全に当てます。すべての基準に達しない人々は「キリスト・イエスによる贖いを通して、恵みにより、賜物として義と宣言されます。」

義と宣言されるとは、罪のない者と宣言され、罪悪感が完全に取り除かれることを意味します。神があなたを義とするとき、あなたがこれまでに行った、そしてこれから行うすべての悪いことの記録を完全にきれいにします。これは「賜物として」来ます。稼いだ賃金としてではなく、自由に与えられた恵みとして。

ローマ6章23節は明確にします。「罪の賃金は死です。しかし、神の賜物は、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある永遠のいのちです。」

「贖い」という言葉は、買い戻す、または自由を購入することを意味します。私たちは罪の奴隷であり、逃げ道のない穴に閉じ込められていました。律法は私たちの投獄を指摘することしかできず、自由にすることはできませんでした。イエスは私たちの自由を購入するために贖いの代価を払いました。これは神にとってひとり子を犠牲にし、イエスにとって血を犠牲にしました。なぜなら、私たちは神の目に貴重だからです。

結論:ロープをしっかりつかむ

パウロは今、私たちがいる深く暗い絶望的な穴に光を当てています。彼はロープ、イエス・キリストを指しています。イエスは私たちを穴から引き上げ、光の中に連れ出すのを待っています。

三つの真理が明確に立っています。私たちは自分で這い上がることはできません。脱出の道があります。その道はイエス・キリストだけです。

信仰に新しい人でも長年信じてきた人でも、私たちは皆、自分を証明するために行いや行動に焦点を当てる傾向があります。しかし、ロープは一つだけです。私たちは自分で這い上がることはできませんし、外に出てからより偉大なものを築くこともできません。神を喜ばせるためにもっと行おうとすることは、実際には自分を証明することであり、これは信仰ではなく高慢を築きます。

聖書は、信仰によってイエスのロープをつかみ、決して手を離さないように私たちに呼びかけます。これは、イエスと共に積極的に歩み、救いと人生の他のすべてのことについて毎日イエスを信頼することを意味します。信頼することをやめると、私たちはロープで滑り始めます。主は、引き上げられている間に壁をつかもうとするのではなく、ロープでの旅を楽しむこと、主との関係を楽しむことを私たちに望んでおられます。

日々、イエス・キリストのロープをしっかりつかんでください。信仰によってしっかりつかんでください。

Picture yourself exploring the ancient Nakabaru ruins on Ike Island. You notice a circular stone structure and step inside to investigate. Suddenly, the ground gives way, and you're falling into a deep, dark pit. The walls are smooth—there's no way up, no way out. You're trapped in complete darkness and hopelessness.

This is exactly where the Apostle Paul has been leading us through the opening chapters of Romans. After beginning with the encouraging thesis that "the righteous shall live by faith" (Romans 1:17), Paul took an unexpected turn in verse 18 of chapter one. Since then, he's been diagnosing the human condition, showing us that we are all trapped in a pit of sin with no escape.

But this morning, Paul turns on the light and shows us the way out.

The Diagnosis: No Way Out

Paul's diagnosis has been thorough and comprehensive. He began by showing that God's wrath is revealed against all ungodliness (Romans 1:18). He traced humanity's downward spiral—how we exchanged the truth of God for a lie, serving created things rather than the Creator.

Then Paul dismantled every excuse we might offer. The morally superior person who judges others? No better off, because judging others doesn't make us righteous (Romans 2:1). Those who possess the law and know the Bible? Having knowledge doesn't equal obedience, and only perfect obedience over a lifetime matters (Romans 2:12-13). Those trusting in religious privilege? They break the very law they boast about.

Paul's conclusion is absolute: "There is no one righteous, not even one" (Romans 3:10). The law exists to show us our sin and stop every mouth from making excuses (Romans 3:19-20). Even if we could do everything perfectly from today forward, we're still broken people who have already broken God's law.

We're at the bottom of a deep, dark pit with no escape.

The Turn: But Now

This is where verse 21 of chapter three becomes transformative: "But now..." These two words signal a dramatic shift. Paul has completed his diagnosis of our terminal spiritual condition. Now he reveals the cure.

"But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though the law and the prophets bear witness to it" (Romans 3:21). God's wrath was revealed in chapter one, verse 18. Now God's righteousness is revealed in chapter three, verse 21.

Notice that God's righteousness comes "apart from the law." The law diagnosed the disease but could never provide the cure. The law showed us God's standard—a flat picture of His character and holiness—but then left us unable to meet it.

However, the Old Testament itself testified to this truth. Consider Jonah: when the people of Nineveh heard God's message, they didn't ask for a copy of the law. They simply cried out for mercy and turned to God in faith. God saw their heart change and had mercy. As Habakkuk 2:4 declares, "The righteous shall live by faith."

The Way Out: Faith in Jesus Christ

Paul continues: "The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction" (Romans 3:22). The rope cast down into our pit is available to all who believe—not those who keep rules, not those who climb religious ladders, not those who possess secret knowledge.

God gives His righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

That word "all" appears repeatedly in verses 22-24. All have sinned and fall short of God's glory. All are justified by His grace as a gift through the redemption in Christ Jesus.

Consider this illustration: imagine you're on a boat to the Kerama Islands when it sinks halfway there. One person swims for five minutes before going under. Another lasts ten minutes. Someone else makes it thirty minutes. Perhaps one person swims for over an hour and can almost see the shore. But who makes it to shore alive? None of them. The person who lasted five minutes and the one who lasted an hour share the same fate.

This is why God doesn't grade on a curve. No matter how much good we can do, we still sin. We still fall short. We still go down. God says, "I'm going to give you my righteousness apart from the law, based on something completely different: faith."

The Gift: Justification and Redemption

Verse 24 brings the light fully on: all who fall short are "justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."

To be justified means to be declared innocent, with guilt completely removed. When God justifies you, He wipes your record entirely clean of everything wrong you've ever done and ever will do. This comes "as a gift"—not as wages earned, but as grace freely given.

Romans 6:23 clarifies: "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

The word "redemption" means to buy back or purchase freedom. We were slaves to sin, trapped in the pit with no escape. The law could only point out our imprisonment but couldn't free us. Jesus paid the redemption price to purchase our freedom. This cost God His only Son and cost Jesus His blood, because we are precious in His sight.

Conclusion: Hold Tight to the Rope

Paul is now shining light into the deep, dark, hopeless pit where we find ourselves. He's pointing to a rope—Jesus Christ—waiting to pull us out of the pit and into the light.

Three truths stand clear: we cannot climb out on our own; there is a way out; that way is Jesus Christ alone.

Whether new to faith or long-time believers, we all tend to focus on our works and actions to prove ourselves. But there is only one rope. We cannot climb out ourselves, nor can we build something greater once we're out. Trying to do more to make God happy is actually proving ourselves, which builds pride rather than faith.

The Bible calls us to take hold of the rope of Jesus by faith and never let go. This means actively walking with Jesus, trusting Him daily for salvation and everything else in life. When we stop trusting, we start to slip. The Lord desires for us to enjoy the ride on the rope—enjoying our relationship with Him instead of grabbing at the walls while being pulled up.

Day after day, hold tight to the rope of Jesus Christ. Hold tight by faith.
