He Loosed the Pains of Death
Good morning for me here on Saturday night by myself. But good morning for you as we come together to study God's word.
Gigan, good morning, not so much. Good morning for me and is Saturday night about 8 when I'm recording this, but good morning for you. You as you know, we face this winter storm this week and there were anticipated, freezing rain, storms this morning at 9 and so out of an abundance of caution. We decided that it would be the best thing for me to come up here and record at 7 for tomorrow that we can still continue our study of God's word together and not have to risk, people getting out in the weather. So we're grateful for the technology that we have, even though sometimes it really frustrates us, and I am grateful that everybody in here. In this room is going to find every joke. I tell hysterical and so I'm really excited about that to. We are here in the book of Acts and Acts chapter 2 beginning in verse 14. Maybe studying this powerful powerful, powerful, sermon that Peter preach. On the day of Pentecost, the sermon is one of the Key Stone moments in the book of Acts because it comes between the miracle of the Holy Spirit coming down and empowering the church at Pentecost as God's Temple. And as the church begins a new movement seeing thousands of people saved in response to. This is the moment, we're God's power was poured out. God's power was put on display and huge multitudes of people came to Christ Our World today, where people are a lot less willing and a lot less excited. It seems like to receive the Gospel. But actually, if we had a little bit more historical awareness, we would know that throughout history Christians faced a lot of problems. You say, well, Might make fun of me people. I not believe, like I believe when he went and he preached places where this case, Peter, when he went and he preached places, he preach to people who didn't believe in Jesus, then even believe in a resurrection from the dead. It was foolish and short-sighted, only believe in one God. And the, to believe that the Universe had a beginning was in comprehensible to the universe, must have always Eternal existed until all the things that were Central to Christianity, the idea that there is one God who's the creator, who's a good loving, father, that made the world perfect. And that gave up his son for our sins and raise him up from the dead so that we can have life. This was not any more normal to ancient people than it is to people today. What's the difference in one very important way? There is no difference at all. There is no difference in the knee that people have that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, there's no difference in the message that needs to be proclaimed. We're going to see that here in a little bit when we study Peter's, sermon. And even more importantly, there's no difference in the power that we have to Proclaim you. A message that the same power, the power of the holy spirit in us and us as individuals in us as a church. That same power that allowed Peter to see, five thousand people saved. In one day that we still have that same power, we still have that same gospel and there is still a lost and dying world that needs to hear it.
In the most important ways, nothing has changed. But something is obviously changed. You can say, well, in the Bible says, in the last days perilous times will come. And it's true that people grow hard-hearted actually, I think that the biggest difference is the psalmist says that if we sow with weeping, we shall doubtless come rejoicing, bringing precious sheaves, When we go out weeping bearing, the precious seed will come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves. If we are not bringing in the sheaves with for Joy saying it's probably because we're not sewing, we're not selling with weeping. Cuz we study this sermon today that the Apostle Peter preach, as we study this powerful message that he proclaimed. I want us to notice how it's the same message that we have a zit go to the book of Acts and the messages ahead. We're going to see that this same pattern comes over and over again. That he says this is what the scripture said would happen if Jesus came and you killed him, that God raised him from the dead. And now you need to repent and believe in him. That the sermon has the same structure as the other sermon in the book of Acts and really the same structure we need to have you that God's word is the foundation. The Jesus dying on the cross was not everything. Going off the rails. That he offered up his son by the hands of Simple, Man. And that he was raised up from the dead for our justification. If will believe in him, we're the same message, we have the same power. So if we don't have the same results, it's because we're not utilizing them the way that God has called us to What a frightening thought that is. We're going to look in Acts chapter 2 verses 14 through 40. You're going to go through this whole sermon Peter preach and the response. It was this is a summary of the sermon, Peter preach is not a stenographer there. So we're going to fill in some of the gaps of the things that his audience could assume. We're come to see the essence of the message that we can take it out and proclaim the same message in our lives. Today, if you want to at home, if you stand with me and honor of the reading of God's word is we looking at 2:14 together. The scripture says this. The Peter standing up with the 11, lifted up, his voice and said unto them, email of Judea and all ye that dwell in Jerusalem, be this known unto you and hearken to my words, please not drunk. And as you suppose thing is about the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel and it shall come to pass. And the last day, a safe God, I will pour out my spirit upon All Flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams, and on my servants. And on my handmaidens, I will pour out in those days if my spirit and they shall prophesy, and I will show wonders in Heaven above and signs in the earth beneath blood and fire and Vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness in the moon, in the blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come. It shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved Israel. Hear these words, a man approved of God among you by Miracles and wonders and signs, which God did buy him in the midst of you is he yourselves also know him being delivered by the determinant Council in for knowledge of God, ye have taken and by Wicked hands have crucified and slain whom God hath raised up having loose the Pains of death because it was not possible that he should be holding of it for David speak of concerning him. I foresaw the lord always before my face for he is on my right hand that I should not be moved. Therefore, did my heart rejoice and my tongue was glad more overall. So, my flash shall Rest In Hope because that will not leave my soul in Hell. Either wealth. I'll suffer line. Holy One to see corruption that has made known to me the ways of life that shot. Make me full of joy with that countenance. Men and Brethren. Let me speak freely unto you of the patriarch David and he smells dead and buried. And his Sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him out of the fruit of his loins. According to the flash, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne. He seeing this before. Speak of the resurrection of Christ that his soul was not left in hell it is flesh. See corruption. Best Jesus. Have God raised up where of we all are witnesses that therefore, being by the right hand of God, exalted and having received of the Father, the promise of the Holy Ghost, he have shed for this, which you now see and hear where David is not descended into the heavens but he save himself. The Lord said unto my Lord sit down on my right hand, until I make my foes like footstool, therefore let all the house of Israel know that God has made that same Jesus crucified both Lord and Christ. And when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the Apostles men and Brethren. What shall we do? Then Peter said into them. Repent and be baptized everyone of you. In the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost for the promise. This is unto you and to your children and to all that. A far-off even as many as the Lord, Our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort saying, save yourselves from this untoward generation. Let's pray Heavenly. Father God, we're so grateful for your word. We're so grateful that you have shown us the message that the same message that they needed, then is the same message we need and that we have. Now. I pray that it's we will look into your word that we would see it more clearly that we would see the beauty of who Jesus is the wickedness of what we buy. Arson have done the wisdom of your plan and the Simplicity of our response to just believe going to pray that you would help us to trust you that you help us to live for you and be a light for you. And I have two things in Jesus name. Amen. I've got four points here this morning first, God's plan. His firm is, he said already, this is not something brand new to. This is his plan from the very beginning. This is what he said, he would do in the Old Testament and he accomplish his will second, man, sent his funeral. They tried to reject Jesus, and they failed than our sin ultimately is just spinning in. The Anderson is ultimately pointless. God's Triumph is final. It was not possible for death to hold Jesus and it is not possible for your sin and your guilt to hold you. When Jesus has called you for giving that his Triumph is final. And that when he has said, the final word, there is no more appeal, Until finally man's response to say to repent and believe to receive the promise that God has given us. It's not our works. It's his grace, with his first thought. God's plan is firm, Peter standing up with the 11 lifts. His voice and said, he meant of Judea and all the 12 Jerusalem. Be this no non to you, and hearken to my words, listen up. Remember they have poured out at Pentecost there there in the upper room for the Holy Spirit comes down upon them and empowers them to speak languages. They've never learned they go out into the crowd and then I saw him you speaking Egyptian and Peter is speaking. Farsi speaking. Different languages language that one, how is this unlearn Galilean speaking? My language, What some of the scoffers hearing these languages, they didn't recognize that all these people are just drunk. That is babbling nonsense. And so Peter Stands Tall. It is everybody listen to me?
These are not drunken as you suppose saying it's what the third hour of the day he's not drunk. It's 9 in the morning. But this is that which was spoken of by the prophet. Joel is that you all have been too deaf to hear what God is saying. You are too blinded by your own sin and your own cynicism to recognize when the hand of God is among you. You've been longing for the day when the Messiah would come when the people would be restored and the promise of Joel would be poured out, even the longing for the day of the Lord, you've been longing for the time that you'd be set free from the Romans, but Jesus has come to set you free from a lot more than that. Is this is that which was spoken by the prophet? Joel. This is what Joel was talking about when he said, and it shall come to pass in the last days, safe God. I will pour out my spirit upon All Flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And in my all, my servants. And all my handmaidens, I will pour out in those days of my spirit and they shall prophesy. What's going on here? He says that ends Joel, Joel and described the Judgment of Israel through this Locust plague that it happened in his time of the judgement of Judah more specifically. And he said, but they'll be a time of restoration in that time. He says, I'm going to pour out my spirit on All Flesh when in the Book of Numbers when Moses was the leader of the people, some people who are prophesying and others came to him and said, Moses, these people are promising and Moses said, don't be jealous on my account. I wish everybody was a prophet, everybody had that closes that they could speak on God's behalf. And Joel said, one day, they will. Is it all pour out my spirit on All Flesh in the immediate context? Of course, the boy means by, that is given by these pairs, right sons and daughter. So men, women young men old man young and old man, servants and maidservants, even from the, the common citizen to the slave, male and female young, and old, every kind of person would receive the Holy Spirit. Peter is speaking better than he knows though because later on the holy spirit's going to be poured out on Cornelius and these Gentiles to. And so although Peter doesn't fully understand it yet because he's very surprised when God pours out his Spirit on the Gentiles, the truth is that all flesh means everybody, All Flesh means that the holy spirit is available to you. And to me, no matter how old you are in a matter, how young you are, no matter what nation you come from that God's gift is the same. Until we said in the last days, I'll pour out my flash and they'll all speak on my behalf. Promising, promising at your, we often think of Prophecy as speaking. The future the prophecy. Fundamentally means speaking on behalf of God. As if sometimes, speaking on behalf of God is telling the future and often in the scriptures, they tell the future to verify that they really are speaking on God's behalf. If I tell you, something's going to happen in three thousand years. You may not believe me unless I tell you this, so what's going to happen next year? And so in the Old Testament and the New Testament as well, they had signs that verified, they were truly speaking on God's behalf. But the essence of Prophecy is not telling the future, it is, proclaiming God's will. So promising prophesying is mostly not foretelling the future, but for telling announcing until here, when they are proclaiming and all these different language, the manifold works of God, they're all proclaiming. The truth are all in this scent prophesying
And we will use the word indifferent different levels of. This is the heart of it and so they get all Flash's able to do that. Not everybody is a preacher. Not everybody, in the Old Testament was a prophet, you know, proclaiming then that authoritative sense. But actually because our mission is to be Witnesses. You shall be Witnesses unto me and Drew slum, and in all Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Because prophecy is about proclaiming God's truth. Speaking on God's behalf. When we look in the book of Acts, we see the main thing that the Holy Spirit does here in in Acts. Is allows people to be Witnesses and lights for Jesus. All flash is able to Proclaim God's word and we know the Holy Spirit does more than that. We know, we said, Galatians already longer. I was in the fruit of the spirit. We've seen the way that it shapes you at the CLE and relationally. But what if we can never lose sight of the fact that one of the main reasons that the spirit shapes dust relationally and ethically is so that we can be witnesses to him. To make us vessels fit for the Masters, use his help. All throwed it to Timothy, that we would be able to Proclaim his glory to Allah sometime world. And so Peter says look they're not these people are drunk. This is what he said. He would come that God will pour out his Spirit on his people. It was some more stuff that strange here, though. I mean, of course, the first 1980s and I will show wonders in Heaven above and signs in the earth beneath blood and fire and Vapor of smoke.
The in the sun shall be turned to Darkness and the moon into blood before that great and notable day of the Lord. Come say well,
That didn't happen here. And we have to understand is that the last days began, hear the resurrection of a Last Days event and the resurrection began with Jesus. So you and I are living in the last days. The climax of the ages has. He's taking place in US. Is that we've been in the last days for a long time. Well, it's in one sense. That's true. Another, it's not a day with the Lord's, the Thousand Years and a thousand years is one day floor is not slack. Concerning his promises some men count slackness but unwilling that any should perish. But that all should come to repentance know that the our sense of time is very different than Gods as we talked about often. Jesus is not concerned with time, he's in town with timing. It's been a long time, it's not been a long time, you that's not really the point. The point is that we are living in this climactic age. We are living in the last days which are building up to the time when the Lord returns. And so what begins with the spirit being poured out? Culminates when the sun's turned to Darkness in the Moon's, turn to blood before the day of the Lord, the time of the Lord's return
Enso piercing here, you better. Get ready. He's on his way. And that's so true. That's so true that God's plan of receiving. The Gentiles was not an accident. But they'd already said that he was going to pour out his Spirit on All Flesh.
That this was God's plan that God's plan is firm and his plan is, of course, this it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be safe and all Flat Shoals. Will receive the spirit whoever calls on the name of the Lord who ever Cries Out trusting in the character and the nature of the Lord shall be saved. I can't skim over that. Can I understand what he's saying that? It's not what you do. It's not you going up to God. It's you crying out to him and send Lord, I know who I am. I'm a sinner who is responsible for the same sense that sent your son to the Cross, but I know who you are. You're the one who loved me. Anyway, who gave your son for me? So that if I call on him, I will be safe until Lord. I call out to you. Now, forgive me and save me. And if you do that, if you call on the name of the Lord, then as surely as the name of the Lord is true, you will be saved. God's plan is for, there's not one plan for Jews and another plan for Gentiles, or one for Baptists, and one for Methodist, not one for young, and one for old, there is one plan and it is that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord. She'll be safe me to call in his name. The new be safe. If they'll know about me, not me. I couldn't got to get ever. Forgive what I've done? Well, when he says whosoever, he means whosoever We think that him sometimes whosoever. Surely mean. It's me when God says who so ever. He means if you'll do it, it's yours.
And so if you're willing to call in the Lord, don't doubt he's going to do what he says. It's been his plan for ages past. That whoever calls on his name, he would respond by pouring out his Spirit on them. So you don't need to clean up your life. You don't need to clean up your act. If you don't believe in Jesus, he'll give you his Holy Spirit and God will change you a little bit at a time from the inside out. Do you have to wait? You just call.
God's plan is sperm. God's plan is unshakable.
The question radical contrast to that man's send is utterly futile like a 22. He says he may have his real Jesus of Nazareth. The Jesus of Nazareth, this particular Jesus has particular man, born in Bethlehem but raised in Nazareth. This man of Flesh and Blood who ate trying and slapped and walked this Jesus I'm An approved of God among you by Miracles and wonders and signs, which God did buy him in the midst of you, as you yourselves. Also know is, if you want to know who Jesus was, it was proven by The Miracles. He went around doing the authenticated him and the people who were here on this day had seen, Jesus is Miracles. Personally, in many cases, and it heard about him in the rest. As Paul would later, tell Felix, these things are not done in a corner as you yourselves also know him Being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, right? God chose to offer Jesus, Jesus gave up his own life willingly, but
Ye have taken in by Wicked hands, have crucified and slain. Peter probably needed some PR training. You don't win over your Audience by saying y'all kill them right. Nobody says, have taken him and by Wicked hands. Have crucified and sign them and kill him. The Romans kill him. It was pilot. Is Ono. You handed him over and you use pilot like the sword in your hand to crucify him. You used Pilots Wicked hands, which of course we're not wash clean, despite his best efforts you use pilot to crucify and slay him because you would not receive your king.
My Brother and Sisters, Jesus died a long time ago, rose again, a long time ago. But if we had been there on that day and we are absolutely fooling ourselves, if we doubt that, we would have been among those yelling crucify him crucify him. Because when we are confronted over our sin, our response is not woe is me. But how dare you, how dare you challenge me? How dare you tell me what to do, how dare you? Confront me and call me out my life's. My own
We don't want anybody to hold us. Responsible for our sin. We don't want anybody to hold us. Accountable and so, and we're faced with it, we just get mad because of our sin and our pride and our self-righteousness. And so we push got away. If when you have the chance to trust Jesus as your savior, you push him away, then you would have liked them yelled crucify, him, crucify him. And handed him over to Pilot to be crucified. Give us Barabbas. It was somebody else give us another king. Let's send be our King. And let us walk and it's changed. Just get this Jesus away from me. that is the response that many people have, even if it wouldn't say it, And it might be for honest, that's the response that almost all of us have it first, isn't it?
The Holy Spirit works on your heart and shows you who you are and shows you who Jesus is. And so your sins become Washer White.
The song that says, why do the nation's rage?
Against the Lord and against his Christ against his anointed. Why do we cry out? Yeah, I can go outside right now, is the storm is blowing in and I could yell and scream at the storm and say, stop it, get away. You know how much good that would do? Not. I can't do anything about it, talking to it. Won't change it. It's a waste of time. Like getting mad at gravity. Just as surely our sin is pointless. Didn't do anything. You said you cry out against God. It doesn't change who goddess doesn't change your circumstances. You send.
You run away from God's will for your life.
And then you die.
You don't you don't stop it. You'll stop the Lord. In fact, as we know that when they tried to hand Jesus over, they were actually just by his to terminate counseling for knowledge bringing Christ Triumph.
Send this foolish. If you're holding on to something in your life, it's not going to work out. You're not going to resolve the problem. You're not going to handle it on your phone. Until it's futile in that way. It's all so futile in the sense that when God has forgiven it is removed from you. As far as the East is from the west. And remember, no more. But if you call on the name of the Lord right now, then your sins will be as if they had never happened. That's a fun little memorization for what? Justified means. The mnemonic for Justified. Justified means, God has made it just as, if I never send, he's declared me just That your scent and meissen. Is underneath the superintending hand of a loving Heavenly Father? I say it's cute. I don't mean it doesn't matter. I don't don't fall into antinomianism and say, well, I'm just going to do whatever I want. If it doesn't matter her about that too. He said, shall we continue to sin that Grace? May abound may, it never be, how shall we did have died to send continue to live there in now? Absolutely not, if you really been saved, if God's really living in your heart, you're not going to live in the pigs too. High. And yet. Another sense. It is meaning less because it is covered in the blood of the lamb and is removed from you. Your sin has no more power over you. My sin has no more power over me. The thing that has power over me because I trusted you as my savior is his resurrection. And that's all that matters. Present sisters. You see that? Do you see that God's plan is firm until Manson is feudal? Later when Paul was saved the holy spirit, said to him, it's hard for you to kick against the goads. Argue against the Spurs, the Prix. Harpy resist. Why are you? Why would you try? Oh Lamb of God, I come Micah.
That's true, whether you're a Believer, it's true. If you're not a Believer yet, Piercing is feudal. Carried away. To let God be in control.
Manson is fuel, of course, that reminds us that God's triumphs final. Does that same Jesus whom God hath raised up having loose the Pains of death because it was not possible that he should be holding of it. You could profitably preach a sermon on this one verse.
OK, Google, tonight cuz years ago, I did the him this Jesus God raised up losing the Pains of death, cutting the bonds of death off of him because it was not possible that he should be holding of it. It was not possible for death to hold Jesus. Family died in the third day. He rose again because Dad had no claim on him. See. Why does death have a claim on you and me. Why is it that when we die? We don't get up again. That's because the wages of sin is death, and all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Death has a claim on me.
And that claim on me is not something that I can never overcome. I don't ever pay that off. the Jesus because he never said, he died in our place, he paid in full And death could not hold him. Wheezing at some Living Hope Wright death, could not hold you. The tear the Veil Tour before you, you silence the boast of sin and Grave, the heavens are roaring. The praise of your glory for you are raised to life again. The death has lost his hold on me because death could not hold Jesus that God's trying up his final. Jesus cannot die again. Death is defeated. He says in revelation behold I have the keys of hell and death is I have the keys Hut, I've gone in. I've taken the keys and I've come out the other side, so I can bring you out with me.
And sometimes we go around with our sin, carrying it with us all the time, like a heavy weight, have you ever gone out to the beach or something not intended to get wet, but then you get in the water anyway, in your regular clothes and they get so heavy hard to go. Pick your feet up and walk.
Who is Carrie are sitting around like that? Weighed down by our sin and our guilt all the time in Jesus's. Just let me loose those burdens from you. Jesus says, I am already carried those burdens away. I have loose them off of me. They are not yours to carry anymore. You were a rebound by your guilt and your shame. We're Bound by guilt and shame. We either wallow in it all blah blah. Or do the opposite extreme Wednesday? Well, it doesn't matter. I'm just going to do what I want, and I've got Grace, I'm going to live in sin. No foreign God says he has loosed the Pains of death that death no longer hold. We are held in the chains of death, but now, death was arrested by Christ. Oh, goodness gracious. Look for David speaking. It's concerning him. I foresaw the lord always. Before my face, before he is on my right hand that I should not be moved. David said, I saw the Lord before me, he is on my right hand, so I'm strong. I'm not strong because I'm strong, I'm strong because he has conquered the grave and he is with me now Peter, when he's preaching the sermon on Pentecost, in 5,000 or safety, knows he can stand firm and speak in front of these people who got more education and more money, and more cloud and more experience than he has. Because the Jesus who had been beside him was within him, he was on his right hand and he said, nothing that happens can make me move. Call brothers and sisters. It is so easy to make us move, isn't it? so, well, I'm going to take a stand still 30 rolls her eyes at me or until somebody.
Someone gives me an attitude and then maybe I'll roll over. It is so much strength that we have and does illustration once with the kids. I think we're if you have a piece of PVC, right? I did it. I think I did it here, too, with our kids time, you got a piece of PVC and I had a suit and come up and try to bend it, you know, big strong student and they can't bend it, because little did they know inside that PVC I'd slipped a piece of rebar And then when the older kid moves out of the way you left the rebar, slide out behind you and hand a little kid, the PVC and they bend it easily, right? It is not What You're Made Of. It's what's inside of you that counts. The Lord is at my right hand so I shall not be moved. It is therefore, did my heart rejoice and my tongue was glad moreover. Also, my flesh shall rest in hope he's like a Rejoice, I could sing
I could die and hope I could lay this body down in Hope because that will not leave my soul in Hell either without suffer line, Holy One to see corruption. You won't leave me the hell here is not like a fire or hell here is just or she'll the grave. You won't leave me in the grave. You won't let your Holy One, see corruption, and what they mean. By this has made me to know the ways of life. That's not make me full of joy with thy countenance, but he finishes this quotation from the Psalms and he says, men and brethren Peter says that let me freely speak under you of the patriarch, David, they smoke dead, and buried. And his Sepulchre is with us, out of this days, as you can go see his grave. David's not come out of the Grave. You can go to Jerusalem today and you can see the tomb of David, you know, allegedly, I don't know, I didn't I didn't go inside. You can see the thing where they say it's the tomb of David, maybe it is. At this time, it's here. Peter says, looking go. See it? David's dead and buried. He's not the one. When he said you won't let your Holy One. See corruption He said there for being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him out of the fruit of his loins. According to the flash, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne. He's seeing this before. Spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in Hell, either his status flash, speak Russian. This is David's not just talking about himself David, as a prophet, was looking forward to Jesus, his descendant. And he knew that his great. Great, great. Great, great, great, great. Great grandson, would die and would rise up again. So David could lay its flesh down and Hope
God's Triumph is vinyl. God's Triumph is final. What God takes up, no man puts down. This Jesus have God raised up where we are all witnesses there for being by the right hand of God, exalted and having received of the Father, the promise of the Holy Ghost, he had shed for this. What you now? See and hear, he said, what does this have to do with tongues swell? He says this same Jesus that you crucify. God's plan was firm and your sin was futile, because God raised him up again. And now the very living Son of God is seated at the right hand of the father. Again, he is exalted to rain in to rule the king, you would not have is King anyway. Any is received from the Father, the promise of the Holy Ghost, any a shed it forth which now you see and hear that weight in Joel. It said God would shed forth. His Spirit, God said, I will shed forth, my spirit, go to the mystery of the Trinity here. It's Jesus is the Lord that pours out his spirit, that the Son of God is very God. The Word was God, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Jesus is the one. He's the Lord to be worshipped. And he has poured out his Spirit, he said you see it, you hear it? Here it is. In your meds. And you know, but the tongues were ate a temporary signs. We talked about last week have a permanent gift that you and I still have the Holy Spirit, the signs and wonders were a temporary sign that the permanent give had come but we should be able to look in Alvin Texas and say
The promise, the Holy Ghost has been given. He said it fourth Among Us, which you now seeing here, as we should be able to say that we don't live the way we used to live. We don't talk the way we used to live that when somebody sees and hears, they should be able to see our speech seasoned with Grace. They should be able to see our lives season with love and generosity and patience, and goodness and mercy. I should be able to see that. We are the people who have been transformed by the presence of God within us. That's true of us to the church family, as true of us individually. That we have received the gift of God from Jesus Christ. Exalted, and his Triumph is final. There is no sin in your life. There is no weakness in your flash that God cannot overcome. There is no problem in your life. That is too big for God to handle.
He pours it out for us.
For David is not ascended into the heavens but he saved himself. The Lord said unto my Lord sit down on my right hand Until I make my phone style. Footstool we read about that. We say that, we say 1st Corinthians. 15 a little bit, right? The Last Enemy which shall be defeated his death. Oh death, where is thy sting? Oh, gray, where is thy Victory? Sting of death is sin and the strength of Senate, the law, but thanks be to God. Gives us the victory. Jesus Christ, Our Lord Therefore let all the house of Israel know, assuredly that God has made him have made that same Jesus. Whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ Jesus, let everybody know that the same Jesus you crucified God is raised. The same. Jesus God is raised. He has called up to his side. And is the Angels told Peter in the first chapter of Acts. That same Jesus that went up to heaven challenge, same man, or return from heaven.
What do we do? What do we do in response to this? God's plan is firm. You have spent enough time sending already. It's futile. It isn't doesn't hold us. God's Triumph is final. So what's our response will be? As it should say? It's to call the name of the Lord is to receive his promise what it says in verse 37. now, when they heard that they were pricked in their heart, They are that they were they were stabbed in the heart. Your been stabbed in the heart that I could do that. I have the same spirit in the same message. I wish I wish that for each and every one of you. I could prick you in the heart. I wish that God's word would prick you in the heart. Hippie hurts and buy it and grieve by it and overwhelmed by it. Somebody can put you in the flash, they can poke your finger, they can smack you around. But that won't save your soul. Now, they got to use got a shot in the heart. They were pricked in their hearts. I know that often when I try my best to breed, I failed to prank people in the heart cuz I see him on there phone. So I see him checking their watches or I see him passing notes about where they're going to go to lunch or whatever. But nobody's doing that on Pentecost. Here, when Peter is preaching, nobody's distracted wondering what time it is and how much longer they have to sit here to get their credit for being a church this week. Nobody is thinking about what they're going to do next or making excuses for their sin or anything else. The spirit is on them. So heavily that they are pricked to the heart. That all they want to know is what shall we do? They said the Peter and the rest of the Apostles men and brother. What shall we do? We have to respond. Yes, everything you said is true. Yes, we are guilty. Yes, we have since yes, Jesus has risen. and you said, I believe that if you really believe that you'd say what can I do, If I gave you some big news and said everything has changed, the whole world is being shaken. You wouldn't say, well, that's very interesting. I believe you write it down and move on with your life know, he would say. What can I possibly do in response to this?
And that's what they did really touches your heart and not just your head, you're going to say, what can I do? How do I respond? Cuz it's got to be personal. It's got to be personal to say. Jesus died for people is true, but not very helpful to say. Jesus died for me, the sinner, like me, Jesus died for my pride and my impatience and my greed, my Jesus died for me. It was his blood poured out for me that I handed him over to Pilots that if it just been me he would have gone to the cross and they would have pierced his hands and his feet and Pierce his brow with a crown of thorns and he would have cried out my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? And if the only answer from Heaven could have been for Justin, Michael Gatlin. God would have sent his son for me or for you. So what can I do?
Then Peter Cetera of them, repent and be baptized. Everyone of you. In the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. He said, repent. Admit that you send turn from your sin to repent means a change of mind. It's an about-face. I was going this way, and I'm going this way with repent. Repentance is not a change of your behavior cuz they're able to do it right now. Right? John called, Good Works, the fruit of repentance No repentance is to turn in my mind and have been serving myself. Have been worshiping myself. I've been worshiping these false gods of this world and now I'm going to turn to the true and living God, that's repentance. And then they were baptized. So we know baptism is a symbol of dying with Christ and being raised up again, I believe in Jesus died for you and was buried and rose up against their baptism is our public profession of their face. your response is to believe, and to be identified with Jesus,
Admit your sins and the call on him and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. He's Able this mean, baptism is necessary for salvation, but in fact, we read elsewhere in the book of Acts where people receive the holy ghost first, and then they're baptized after the next 10. It's obviously it's not that here. Is it necessary for salvation in the strict literal sense? No, of course not, is it necessary for people who are saved to be baptized, in the sense that, if you've been saved, you've got no good excuse to disobey the Lord who died for you, yes, it is necessary, and that meaning of the word necessary, The god, deserves and demands. Our faithfulness, he deserves deserves and demands our obedience.
Doesn't say he doesn't come to church once a week. I didn't say Ty the doesn't say, read your Bible. He says, repent and turn to him.
It's not the things that we can do. It's what Jesus is already dying. Our response is Faith God's plan. It's firm doesn't change. Our sin is feudal. You're not going to win in your Rebellion.
God's trumpets, final. Jesus. Resurrection is the last word that matters?
if you receive a pardon from the president United States for a federal crime, do you know who can charge you after that? Nobody. The president of the Constitution as planetary, pardon power. they can use it wisely or foolishly or wickedly. But nevertheless, they have it. If that a present issues you a pardon and in exchange for a million dollars, the pardon is under our law. Still valid, president may get in trouble, but not you, you're free.
God does not issue pardons wickedly. he has an issue, pardons capriciously and he doesn't issue pardons where you might have to answer to some other court. Like, if you commit a state crime and federal crime, Nope, God's pardon his final. And he doesn't demand a million dollars. He doesn't demand political loyalty. He demands. Faith. I don't know. Justin. I am not perfect. You can crap with the father in Mark 9, high believe, help my unbelief.
The Bible says, if you have faith like a mustard seed you can tell a mountain jump and it will jump. Right? That you don't need a lot of faith. You just need to know that you've sent and believe that Jesus went to the cross for you and ask him for forgiveness and you'll have it. Every time you receive not the wages of the Holy Ghost, the wages of sin is death. It's what you deserve, you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, the free pardon of sin. For the promise, is unto you and to your children. And to all that are far off even as many as the Lord, Our God shall call on the Holy Spirit. Convicts you the promises yours. You say why? I don't know. I don't know if this is for me friend, if God is drawing you in your heart right now and showing you your need for him. If he's showing you right now, your need for a savior, he's calling you Then this for you. if you'll take it, With many other words to testifying exhorts saying, save yourselves from this untoward generation. He didn't just say that I'm leaving. He begged please. Save yourself from this wicked Generation by believing the promise of God and turning to him. That's only thing I can really close with his in. Save yourself from this wicked generation. Save yourself. Not by yourself, not by your works, but by trusting Jesus. Would you do that right now? All you have to do is say, I know that I've sent I know that Jesus died for me. Will you forgive me and save me? I'm pricked in my heart. I hear you calling to me. So I'm going to call to you. I don't ask for a feeling, I don't ask for a sign. I take you at your word. God, forgive me and save me. And that very moment, the Bible says you're made a new creature. Old things are passed away, behold. All things are become new. Do not leave this and say what an interesting historical note on this early sermon in Acts 2 and God prick your heart. My heart. That we will respond. For his glory.
Heavenly Father God. We know that you have loosed the Pains of death The dead has no more hold over us, because Christ is risen. I pray father that you would help us each to look at our own heart and see our need for you or that's a need for you and salvation. Or an opportunity for transformation. I pray that you would help us to lean on you more. Completely to know you better and love you more. If there's anyone under the sound of my voice, who does not know you, as their personal Saviour, ask the right now, God that your Holy Spirit would prick their hearts. if this would be the day, That, they'd see Jesus before them and the world behind them. And call out to you. They could have eternal life. I have two things in Jesus name. Amen.
