We are the Sum Total of Our Decisions

How Do We Know We are Hearing From God?

Proverbs 3:6 NLT
Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

The Bible Uses the Will of God in Three Ways

1. The Providential Will of God

Galatians 4:4–5 NLT
But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.
Revelation 20:11–15 NLT
And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Moral Will of God

Live Holy Lives

1 Thessalonians 4:3 NLT
God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.

Put Off Old Nature - Put on New Nature

Ephesians 4:22–29 NLT
throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil. If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Obey the Government

Romans 13:1–5 NLT
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.
Romans
Romans 13:1-
Romans 13:1–8 NLT
Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority. Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.
1 Peter
1 Peter 2:13–17 NLT
For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.

3. The Personal Will of God

“God doesn’t give us direction for us to consider, He gives us direction assuming we will obey”
Proverbs 3:5–6 NLT
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Obedience to God brings further revelation

Thomas Merton. “We receive enlightenment only in proportion only as we give ourselves more and more through our humble submission to God. We do not first see and act, we first act and then see, and that is why the man who waits to see clearly before he will ever believe never starts on the journey.”

God is More Interested in Us Discovering Him than Discovering His Will

Phillip Yancy“I don’t get to know God and then do his will. I get to know him more deeply by doing his will.”

Who is willing to Trust the Lord with All their Heart?

Who is Willing to say yes… yes… yes?
