Introduction

Every aspect of Luke’s gospel exudes his personal touch, from its literary composition to its portrayal of Christ. Luke gospel however, is not the first gospel. The first one written belongs to Mark casting Jesus in the role of a servant. Doctor Luke has given us a “second opinion.” It is this second opinion we would like to focus on this morning. Luke’s gospel is a personal, compassionate gospel. Our world is impersonal. Human life has now become just a number, a computer, a consumer statistic, a tiny cog in a giant machine. In the 21st century our world has become artificial to the point that humans no longer have to think. Intelligence is now artificial. We desperately need a personal touch. We need that gentle look which knows our name and keeps us from getting lost in an anonymous crowd. What we really need is the presence of compassion to restore humanity. So, we need Jesus!
Luke in his gospel reveals the compassion and human touch of our Saviour (Luke 19:10).
Here are a few unique details of Luke’s gospel:
Raising the Widow’s Son (Luke 7:11-15).
Speaking Tenderly to a Nameless Woman who Anoints His Feet (Luke 7:36-56).
Elevating a Samaritan whom the Jews Shunned (Luke 10:25-37)
Extending a Friendly Hand to a Rotten Little Tax Collector (Luke 19:1-10).
Some Introductory Comments Regarding Luke
William Barclay writes, “Luke sees no limits to the Love of God.”
Luke was no doubt a gentle, caring and loving man himself. He was the “Beloved Physician” and a “Loving Physician” (Colossians 4:4).
Paul and Luke travelled side by side. Paul carrying his cloak and the gospel. Luke carrying his medical bag and encouraging words. Paul would write in his final letter to young Timothy, “only Luke is with me.” Luke was more than just a physician; he was a lover of people, a healer of the soul.
There are many insights we could look into in Luke’s gospel. However, the most important insight in Luke’s gospel is “The Value of Seeing Christ as the Son of Man.”
If you sometimes feel lost in a world that degrades and dehumanizes, the good doctor will acquaint you with the Son of Man, the divine One with the human touch.
