Paraphrase (modern English with CHAT): Christ was chosen from among humanity so that he could understand our needs and feel compassion for us.
Psalm 89:19 NLT
19 Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people. You said, “I have raised up a warrior. I have selected him from the common people to be king.
Jesus, experienced every kind of temptation we face, yet he never sinned. Because of this, he truly sympathizes with us in every sorrow. Temptation, pain, disappointment, weakness, exhaustion, and poverty—he knows them all because he lived through them himself.
Remember this, believer, and let it comfort you.
No matter how hard or painful your path becomes, your Savior has already walked it before you.
Even when you enter the darkest moments of life and face death itself, you will find that he has already been there.
Everywhere we go, he has gone first;
every burden we carry was once carried by Immanuel.
Key themes:
Christ’s full humanity and lived experience
Deep compassion rooted in shared suffering
Comfort in knowing we never walk alone
Hope and courage in suffering and even in death
The passage is meant to reassure believers that Christ’s sympathy is not distant or abstract—it is grounded in real experience, making him a present and faithful companion in every trial.
