ESTABLISHED — WEEK 2

Established in Identity

Authority flows from identity in the Kingdom of God

WELCOME

Good evening, church. Welcome to The Vine Collective.
Before we do anything else, I want to say this simply:
If you’re here tonight and you’re not sure what you believe… If you’re here because you were invited… If you’re here because you’re searching… Or if you’re here carrying wounds from church…
You’re not a project. You’re a person.
And tonight, you’re safe to listen, to think, and to breathe.

INTRO HOOK

I want to start with something .
Have you ever noticed how quickly people label us?
At work, you’re “the dependable one.” In your family, you’re “the strong one.” In school, you’re “the problem one.” In church, you’re “the spiritual one.”
And sometimes the label isn’t even wrong.
But here’s the danger:
A label may describe you for a season, but it was never meant to define you for life.
Over time, what started as a description quietly becomes our identity.
And once identity is shaped by labels, we stop asking God who we are and start defending who people think we are.
That’s exhausting.
Some of us have been carrying labels for years:
“I’m the one who always messes up.” “I’m the one who has to hold everything together.” “I’m the one who can’t fail.”
Nobody forced us to keep those labels. We accepted them. And then we started living from them.

KINGDOM FRAME — ESTABLISHED

Now here’s where the Kingdom of God confronts our thinking.
Because in a kingdom, identity does not come from opinion. It comes from authority.
In a kingdom:
the king defines identity
the king assigns purpose
the king delegates authority
Culture says, “You are what you achieve.” “You are what people say about you.” “You are what you produce.”
But the Kingdom of God says:
You are who the King says you are.
That’s why this series is called ESTABLISHED.
Because in the Kingdom of God:
identity must be established before authority is released
character must be formed before influence is trusted
alignment must happen before expansion comes
Say this slowly:
If identity is not established, expansion becomes dangerous.

INTRODUCING DAVID

Tonight we’re going to look at the life of David, in 1 Samuel chapters 16 and 17.
Most people know David as the giant killer.
But before David ever faced a giant, he faced misunderstanding from the people closest to him.
David was the youngest son in his family. In ancient culture, that mattered.
The youngest didn’t inherit much. The youngest didn’t lead. The youngest wasn’t taken seriously.
David wasn’t just overlooked — he was categorized.

and i love it because GOD SEES DIFFERENTLY

📖 1 Samuel 16:7
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
David wasn’t even invited to the meeting.
That’s important.
He wasn’t unseen by accident. He was unseen by design.
Because God often establishes identity where applause can’t reach.

ANOINTED BUT NOT PROMOTED

📖 1 Samuel 16:13
“Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him… and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.”
David is anointed.
And then nothing changes.
No throne. No crown. No platform.
David goes right back to the field.
Hear this clearly:
Being chosen does not mean being ready. And being anointed does not mean being promoted.
Delay is not denial. Delay is development.
God delays promotion to protect identity.

DAVID AND GOLIATH — IDENTITY UNDER PRESSURE

Now fast-forward to chapter 17.
David shows up to the battlefield just to bring food.
Everyone else is terrified.
📖 1 Samuel 17:11
“They were dismayed and greatly afraid.”
Fear fills the camp.
Fear always grows where identity is weak.

WHY HIS BROTHERS CALLED HIM prideful

📖 1 Samuel 17:28
“Why have you come down here? … I know how conceited you are.”
Why would his brother say that?
David wasn’t bragging. David wasn’t promoting himself. David simply trusted God.
Here’s the truth:
When confidence is rooted in God, insecure people often label it pride.
David’s faith exposed their fear.
Instead of dealing with their fear, they attacked David’s heart.
That still happens today.

IDENTITY REVEALED IN RESPONSE

📖 1 Samuel 17:30
“He turned away to someone else…”
David doesn’t defend himself.
When identity is established, you don’t need to win every argument.
Insecure people explain. Secure people walk.

KINGDOM AUTHORITY — THE NAME OF THE LORD

Then David says something powerful.
📖 1 Samuel 17:45
“You come against me with sword and spear… but I come against you in the name of the Lord.”
This is not emotion .
In a kingdom, the name represents authority.
David is saying:
I don’t come in my own name.” “I come sent by the King.” “I come aligned with His authority.” “I am aligned with the King.” “I am acting under the King’s authority.” “I am enforcing the King’s will.”
He continues:
📖 1 Samuel 17:46
“This day the Lord will deliver you…”
David is not waiting to see what happenes He is enforcing what heaven has already decided.

IDENTITY → AUTHORITY → RELEASE (BIBLE)

This is how the Kingdom works.
📖 Matthew 3:17
“This is My beloved Son…”
Identity before power.
📖 Luke 10:19
“I have given you authority…”
Authority delegated.
📖 Matthew 6:10
“Your Kingdom come, Your will be done…”
Release through alignment.
Say this clearly:
The more we understand who we are under God, the more we walk in what heaven has already authorized.
we dont force heaven — we align with it.

SURRENDER — WHY THIS GENERATION STRUGGLES

Surrender is hard for this generation.
We were taught:
be strong
be independent
don’t let anyone tell you what to do
There’s a macho pride that says, “I got this.”
But Scripture says:
📖 James 4:7
“Submit yourselves to God…”
Submission is not weakness. Submission is alignment.
Even Jesus modeled this.
📖 Philippians 2:8–9
“He humbled Himself… therefore God exalted Him.”
Exaltation follows surrender.

ALTAR — SURRENDER IDENTITY

Tonight’s response is not about emotion.
It’s about surrender.
Surrendering:
labels
pride
control
false identity
📖 Romans 12:1
“Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice…”
This is the doorway to transformation.

CLOSING DECLARATION

Church, receive this:
You are not fighting for victory. You are enforcing the will of the King.
But authority only flows when identity is established under Him.

FINAL PRAYER

Father, tonight we surrender identity.
Not our gifts — our control. Not our strength — our pride.
Establish us as sons and daughters in Your Kingdom.
And as we align with You, release what heaven has already decided.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
