Last week we started looking at “God’s Guardrails of Guidance” as he teaches Israel to follow Him...
Remember the situation from Exodus 16:
God heard the murmuring of Israel and He was sure to let Moses know that
He tells Israel they will eat flesh in the evening and bread in the morning
For the entire purpose once again, “...and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.”
But when the provision of bread came, it was unfamiliar to Israel and they didn’t recognize it...
Moses had to explain it to them as to what it was
God gave the law telling them how much to gather and when to gather
They disobeyed and the result was stinking worms in the bread
God then gave the law again - stating the law surrounding the sabbath
This time they obeyed and there were no worms or smell
God gave the law again and Israel disobeyed again
God then confronts Moses saying, “How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?”
Once again God restated the sabbath law
and the people named the bread Manna
Let’s go over the first 6 points quickly for your blanks:
God Heard and Reinforced His ability to provide (vs. 9)
God’s presence meant something (vs. 10)
Instruction Given (vs. 11-12) - you’re going to have flesh for dinner and bread for breakfast
God Kept His Word (vs. 13-14)
Moses Identified the Provision (vs. 15)
Instruction Given (vs. 16)
7. Instruction Followed
17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less. 18 And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.
8. Instruction Given
19 And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.
9. Disobedience & Chastening
20 Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them. 21 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.
10. Instruction Given
23 And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
11. Obedience & Blessing
24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.
12. Instruction Given
25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field. 26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.
13. Disobedience & Chastening
27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. 28 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?
14. Instruction Given
29 See, for that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
15. Obedience & Blessing
30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
16. Memorial
32 And Moses said, This is the thing which the Lord commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt. 33 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations. 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
At the end, God would use this same manna to be a memorial for generations:
33 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations. 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
Later it would be 1 of 3 items stored in the Ark of the Covenant:
Aaron’s Rod
Tablets of ten commandments
Manna
God was guiding His people into correct behavior, specific obedience and trust in provision...
It’s important our kids:
Behave correctly - they can’t just run around doing whatever they want. They need to know how to behave; where to go; what to do; what to wear; how to speak; etc.
Obey specifically - there is no room for disobedience when a plain command has been given and understood. Loving chastening and rebuke is required in order for those God places in our care not to fly off the road. Parameters, rules, guardrails are good for keeping us where we need to be and in the direction we need to go...
Trust in provision - In order for Israel to properly obey the first two principles, it was required they trust God…
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
And lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him,
And he shall direct thy paths.
Parenting Principles:
Training comes before chastening
Be persistent to your word
