This is Life!_p4: Participating in The Overflow

Romans 15:13 NIV
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
[TODAY] - Why does this overflow exist?
Because that is LIFE in Christ
But, there is a mission and purpose for it
[PAYOFF] - Your life is overflowing for a reason!
[EXAMPLE] - Jesus feeding the 5000
This is a foreshadowing of abundant life at work in the lives of believers...
Luke 9:12–17 NIV
Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” (About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Now, Jesus uses this moment as a lesson for the Disciples.
They were the ones that had to trust Him, not the 5000
All the 5000 had to do was sit down…

Providing for the multitude

John 6:5–6 NIV
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Now, Jesus uses this moment as a lesson for the Disciples.
They were the ones that had to trust Him, not the 5000
All the 5000 had to do was sit down…

The answer was already with them!

John 6:7–9 NIV
Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
Matthew 14:19 NIV
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
Jesus was showing the Disciples that The answer was already with them!
5 barely loaves = Grace + Christ’s body.
The next thing we see…
This miracles didn’t happen in Jesus’s hands…
The miracle took place in their own hands!

The miracle took place in their own hands!

Matthew 14:19 NIV
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
[FINALY] - we see that... It was more than enough!

It was more than enough!

Mark 6:42–43 NIV
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
Lavish feast, abundance
Mark 6:42-
12 baskets - More left over than started with.

Participating in the overflow

[PAYOFF] - I want Jesus to use ME in this way
But how?

1. Offer to Him what you have!

All they had was 5 loaves and 2 fish, that was enough for God to use!
Romans 12:1 NIV
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Bring your gift or talent, no matter how insignificant you may feel it is!

2. Allow Him to use your hands!

The Disciples had to trust the Lord in everything they distributed…
The Disciples had to trust the Lord in everything they distributed…
And so do we, even when we feel we don’t have what it takes!
He gives us the power!
Remember: 5 loaves = Grace + Christ
2 Corinthians 12:9–10 NIV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

3. Do whatever He tells you!

The Disciples did as they were told…
“Bring to me…”
“Have them sit down…”
“Distribute…”
Another story of miraculous provision is the Wedding at Cana…
John 2:5–8 NIV
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,
The Disciples did as they were told…
“Bring to me…”
“Have them sit down…”
Jesus seems to really be in the business of feeding others, doesn’t He?...
“Distribute…”
Another story of miraculous provision is the Wedding at Cana…

Take Away

Luke 9:17 NIV
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
The most interesting part of the story to me is – the baskets.
Greek = kophinos
With a handle for traveling
Volume of 2-gallons
These could be baskets that the Disciples would have with them on their journeys..
If so, this was a basket they would have already had
A basket in which Jesus broke the bread and placed in their basket
From their basket, they distributed the multiplying Body of Christ
When they came back to Jesus, this basket was just as full
Off to the next journey, carrying the sacrificial Body of Christ!
Acts 1:8 NIV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

We are His hands and feet!

[SIDE NOTES] - Interesting side not about the feeding event...
Why did he have them sit in groups of 50?...
