Free to Be Who You Are: Embracing Your God-Given Identity

Bible Passage: Galatians 4:21-5:1

Summary: This passage contrasts the bondage of the law, represented by Hagar, and the freedom of grace, represented by Sarah, emphasizing that believers are no longer slaves but children of God.
Application: Young people today often feel the pressure of societal expectations, peer influences, and misguided beliefs about their identity. This sermon will encourage them to recognize and reject these negative influences, embracing the freedom and identity they have in Christ.
Teaching: This passage teaches that believers are set free from the law and its consequences, and that true identity is found in being a child of God, not in conforming to societal pressures.
How this passage could point to Christ: In this passage, Christ represents the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham, establishing a new covenant of grace that liberates believers from the bondage of sin and the law, enabling them to live freely as heirs of God's promises.
Big Idea: True freedom comes from embracing our identity as children of God, rejecting the negative influences of the world that seek to bind us.
Recommended Study: As you prepare, consider diving into the distinctions between Hagar and Sarah to explore the allegorical implications of this passage. Look into traditional interpretations and how they relate to contemporary struggles among teens. Using Logos, you might examine commentaries on Galatians that address the influence of cultural and religious pressures on personal identity, noting how these can mislead young believers away from their true calling in Christ.

1. Rejecting Hagar's Bondage

Galatians 4:21-25
the child of Hagar was a child of the flesh
when Abraham and Hagar had a child it was because Sarah and Abraham questioned the promise of God
society will pressure you question Gods promise in your life.
name some things that society says you have to do?
when we live by these societal pressures, we are living a life of bondage.
The people of this church were finding themselves stuck in following the law and living by it rather than by the freedom they receive in christ, the promise of god! (genesis 3)

2. Embracing Sarah's Freedom

Galatians 4:26-29
the child of Sarah was a child of promise
the child is a blessing because the child was the offspring promised by God
when we live for christ
we are free
we are not judged
we are loved

3. reject the negative influences and pursue the positive

Galatians 4:30-5:1
the difficulty of casting out the slave woman
she had no control in the situation
God promised a lesser blessing to her descendants
what Paul is saying here
casting the slave woman out
does not mean turning people away who have no control
this is still an allegory
remove the negative influences from your lives
don't let yourself be distracted by the by others pressuring you away from your identity in christ.
when you seek christ rather than give in to the pressures you are living a life of freedom and promise.
