What’s Wrong with “Mental Health”?
What’s Wrong with “Mental Health”?
The term “Mental (Soul) Health” is…
Confusing
Unbiblical
The APA (American Psychological Association) defines “Mental Health” as a state of mind characterized by:
emotional well-being,
good behavioral adjustment,
relative freedom from anxiety and disabling symptoms,
and a capacity to establish constructive relationships
and cope with the ordinary demands and stresses of life.
Which aspect in the definition are medical realities?
Are emotions in our body?
Is behavioral adjustment a medical issue?
Are any of the things listed medical issues?
The APA is saying that “mental health” is all of these IMMATERIAL THINGS!
IS MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE YOUR EMOTIONS BEING GOOD?
3 John 1–4
gg
1 From the elder, to Gaius my dear brother, whom I love in truth.
2 Dear friend, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul (I want your outer man to be as prosperous as your inner man).
3 For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, just as you are living according to the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are living according to the truth.”
When you say “mental (soul) health” you are using medical terminology to describe the immaterial.
The bible doesn’t use medical terminology to talk about the person.
When you use the term “mental health” it is inferring medical treatment.
The bible doesn’t use the term “health” for the mind that is well it uses the term “renewed”.
Ephesians 4:20–21
20 But you did not learn about Christ like this,
21 if indeed you heard about him and were taught in him, just as the truth is in Jesus.”
Ephesians 4:22–24
22 You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires,
23 to be renewed (restored back to a mint condition) in the spirit of your mind,
24 and to put on the new man who has been created in God’s image—in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.”
Romans 12:1–2
1 Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice—alive, holy, and pleasing to God—which is your reasonable service.
2 Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.”
What makes a mind truly well, renewal.
You need Scripture to renew your mind.
