Illustration #1

My Grandfather and I frequently went to see the Oakland A’s play baseball at the Oakland Coliseum. He would like to get to the games early because he liked to see the players warm up, and take batting practice. I didn’t understand why the need to be there so early. I would say things such as I like to see the home runs, people stealing bases, and the great catches and throws. He would then say he also likes to see the spectacular, but the only way the players could get good at the spectacular was by mastering the fundamentals. As I followed sports, played sports, played music, and attempted to accomplish anything worth while, I always remember that to be good at anything, it is important to master the fundamentals. It is for that reason that I would like to take this time with you today to discuss the fundamentals of the faith that we practice.

Ephesians 2:1-10

2 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins

The noun for “love” (agapē) comes from the verb agapaō that means “to seek the highest good in the one loved.”
