Main Text
Matthew 4:18-22 NKJV
And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
20 And they immediately left the nets and followed Him.
21 And going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them.
22 And they immediately left the boat and their father and followed Him
Introduction
It can happen in a second. One phone call, one message, one empty room, and your world changes. The call of Jesus should be handled with the utmost seriousness and obedience.
In Matthew 4:18-22, Jesus calls his first disciples, Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John, to follow him and become fishers of men.
This passage occurs early in Jesus' ministry, right after he had been tempted in the wilderness by the devil. Jesus is walking by the Sea of Galilee and sees these fishermen working.
He calls out to them, inviting them to leave their nets and follow Him.
Imagine the scene in which Jesus approaches Simon Peter and Andrew as they go about their daily work. They are offered a choice between continuing their familiar routines and embarking on a new journey with Jesus. Following Jesus signifies a deep sense of trust and commitment.
Theme: The Call That Changes Everything
Let’s step into a scene by the Sea of Galilee, a simple moment in setting yet eternal impact, the calling of the first disciples in Matthew 4:18-22. This passage is far more than a narrative of men leaving their nets; it is a revelation of what happens when a soul encounters the voice of Jesus.
This collection of stories, which details the calling of Jesus’s first disciples, helps us understand the kind of people who flocked to Jesus.
The first thing that stands out is the ordinary circumstances in which we meet them. Peter and Andrew were using cast nets on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.
These were circular nets, 18 to 25 feet (5.5 to 7.6 meters) in diameter, with stones attached to the perimeter.
The tension in Matthew 4:18-22 is evident in the disciples' response to Jesus' call to follow Him. The tension arises because they were fishermen with their own lives, jobs, and families to attend to, yet Jesus called them to leave everything behind and follow Him.
