Matthew 6:9–13 NASB95
9 ... ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
1 Peter 1:13–16 NASB95
13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:13 NASB95
13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Paul is telling us to prepare our minds for battle
MacArthur Study Bible NASB (Commentary) Prepare your minds The meaning is to pull in all the loose ends of one’s thinking, by rejecting the hindrances of the world and focusing on the future grace of God
Spiritual sober-mindedness includes the ideas of steadfastness, self-control, clarity of mind, and moral decisiveness.
The sober Christian is correctly in charge of his priorities and not intoxicated with the various allurements of the world
11243 The majority of us recognize the necessity of receiving the Holy Spirit for living, but we do not sufficiently recognize the need for drawing on the resources of the Holy Spirit for thinking.
Oswald Chambers (Lecturer and Missionary)
1 Peter 1:14 NASB95
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,
Conformed: Means to be gathered too or intertwined in, to be bonded or welded.
Lusts: ἐπιθυμία epithumia; from 1937; desire, passionate longing, lust:—coveting(2), desire(4), desires(8), earnestly(1), impulses(1), long(1), lust(5), lustful(1), lusts(15).
The way not to be conformed is through unwavering obedience to God and His Word, a full submission to the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 1:15 NASB95
15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
Holiness is what defines the Christian’s new nature, this contrasts one’s pre-salvation lifestyle.
There should be a noticeable change in someone after they get saved.
But behaviour modification is what truly marks a Christian.
I personally know pagans that modify their behaviour to become better people.
What marks a Christian is the complete repulsion of sin that used to have no effect on them.
Do You Hate Your Sin?
1 Peter 1:16 NASB95
16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Fire Bible
God is holy, and what is true of God should be true of his people.
Holiness, when referring to God, relates to his absolute purity, perfection, completeness and separation from evil.
When applied to God’s people, holiness carries the thought of being morally pure, spiritually whole, separated from the ungodly ways of the world and set apart for love, service and worship to God
Holiness is not only avoiding evil; it is also pursuing godliness
Holiness is a goal of our calling to follow Christ, it means being like God and being dedicated completely to him, living to please him.
We are made holy by the sanctifying (i.e., purifying, refining, developing, setting apart) work of the Holy Spirit,
by the power of Christ’s sacrifice that frees us from the power of sin,
by being renewed in the image of God
and by the gift of God’s grace which enables us to obey God and live by his Word.
We cannot be Holy and constantly quench the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is one or the other.
we are either filled by the spirit or bone dry.
We may depend upon it as a certainty that where there is no holy living there is no Holy Ghost.
J. C. Ryle
5785 It is extraordinary how things fall off from a man like autumn leaves once he comes to the place where there is no rule but that of the personal domination of the Holy Spirit.
Oswald Chambers (Lecturer and Missionary)
Take Home?
Are You Ready to be Holy?
Most Christians are not joyful persons because they are not holy persons, and they are not holy persons because they are not filled with the Holy Spirit, and they are not filled with the Holy Spirit because they are not separated persons. The Spirit cannot fill whom He cannot separate, and whom He cannot fill, He cannot make holy, and whom He cannot make holy, He cannot make happy!1
A. W. Tozer
Benedictine
Philippians 4:8–9 NASB95
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
