Malachi 2:1–17 NASB 2020
“And now, this commandment is for you, the priests. If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the Lord of armies, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart. Behold, I am going to rebuke your descendants, and I will spread dung on your faces, the dung of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it. Then you will know that I have sent this commandment to you, so that My covenant may continue with Levi,” says the Lord of armies. “My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and was in awe of My name. True instruction was in his mouth and injustice was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and justice, and he turned many back from wrongdoing. For the lips of a priest should maintain knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the Lord of armies. But as for you, you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by the instruction; you have ruined the covenant of Levi,” says the Lord of armies. “So I also have made you despised and of low reputation in the view of all the people, since you are not keeping My ways but are showing partiality in the instruction.” Do we not all have one Father? Is it not one God who has created us? Why do we deal treacherously, each against his brother so as to profane the covenant of our fathers? Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord which He loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. As for the man who does this, may the Lord eliminate from the tents of Jacob everyone who is awake and answers, or who presents an offering to the Lord of armies. And this is another thing you do: you cover the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and sighing, because He no longer gives attention to the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your marriage companion and your wife by covenant. But not one has done so who has a remnant of the Spirit. And why the one? He was seeking a godly offspring. Be careful then about your spirit, and see that none of you deals treacherously against the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with violence,” says the Lord of armies. “So be careful about your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.” You have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet you say, “How have we wearied Him?” In that you say, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and He delights in them,” or, “Where is the God of justice?”

Have You received the anointing of YHWH Ruach?
Revelation From God

Author

The prophet Malachi was the last of the Old Testament prophets. His name means "my messenger," or "my angel," but this may be an apocopated form of Malachiah, "messenger of Yahweh" (see Mal2:7) or "Yahweh is my messenger" (just as Abi, "my Father," in 2Ki18:2 appears as Abijah, "Yahweh is my Father," in 2Ch29:1). Most Scholars do not believe it was the writers actual name!!!! Many believe the writer to be Ezar the Messenger of YHWH.
Date
Wide agreement exists that the Book of Malachi was written during the last half of the fifth century B.C. Some even pinpoint the date between 420 and 415 B.C. This would place the Book of Malachi about one hundred years after the ministries of Haggai and Zechariah. There are numerous ties in the book to the concerns of Nehemiah, who was governor in Judah around 440 B.C. These include marriages with foreign women (Neh_13:23-27), not paying tithes (Neh_13:10-14), neglecting the Sabbath (Neh_13:15-22), a corrupt priesthood (Neh_13:7-9), and injustice (Neh_5:1-13).
This would also been the time of Ezra as well 440-400 BCE.
Structure
Malachi is a gem of clarity, simplicity, and directness. In forty-seven of its fifty-five verses, the Lord addresses Israel using the first-person address.
It is generally conceded that Malachi uses a prose format. Malachi's skillful use of questions is reminiscent of Habakkuk's technique some 200 years earlier. The repetition of words and figures of speech—"says the LORD" appears twenty times in fifty-five verses, for example—further contributes to the strong style in this book. The most distinctive trait of Malachi's prose is his use of the disputational method to introduce each of the six sections; in fact, his entire message is punctuated with questions from both his audience and his Lord (Mal1:2, Mal1:6, Mal1:7, Mal1:8, Mal1:9, Mal1:13; Mal2:10, Mal2:14, Mal2:15, Mal2:17; Mal3:2, Mal3:7, Mal3:8, Mal3:13).
Typically, after introducing a declaration from God, Malachi records the audience's rebuttal or protestations with the words, "yet you say" (Mal1:2, Mal1:6, Mal1:7, Mal1:13; Mal2:14, Mal2:17; Mal3:7, Mal3:8, Mal3:13). Even though the other prophets engaged in exchanges with their audiences (e.g., Isa40:27, Isa40:28; Jer2:23-25, Jer2:29-34, Jer2:35-36; Jer8:8-9; Eze12:21-28; Hag1:2), Malachi is the master of this technique. With consummate skill he fields each of the audience's protestations. How pathetic are these protestations! They reflect an artificial piety and gross misunderstanding of the program and message of God. Nevertheless, Malachi will not be sidetracked from his master theme: God loves His people, however hypocritical and insincere they remain.
Finally, one is struck in this book by another supporting theme—the majesty of God. He is, indeed, Master, Lord, and King. Add to this theme of God's majesty the greatness of the name of God (Mal1:5, Mal1:11, Mal1:14; Mal2:2), the success of His coming Messiah, and the day of the Lord standing sure despite the people's lack of respect, and the profundity of the theology found in this book increases. A believing remnant nevertheless remains; they still "fear the LORD" (another theme of the book repeated in Mal1:6, Mal1:11, Mal1:14; Mal2:5; Mal3:5, Mal3:16; Mal4:2, Mal4:5). However, the two pivotal statements in the book are: "I have loved you" (Mal1:2) and "For I am the LORD, I do not change" (Mal3:6). Malachi, then, is the book about the unchanging love of God. Purpose
The Book of Malachi is about the error of forgetting the love of God. When people forget God's love, it affects their attitudes, home, and worship. With God's love and loyalty in doubt, sacred commitments no longer remain sacred. God sent Malachi to rouse the people from their spiritual stupor and to exhort them to return to the living God. But the Book of Malachi reveals a people who question the reality of their sin and the faithfulness of God, a people hardened through and through. Thus the book ends on a poignant note, a confrontation between a disappointed God and a disappointed people.
In a sense, the Book of Malachi shows that the Old Testament comes to a chasm, with the bickering voices of the people on one side and the stern warnings of God on the other. Only the Lord Himself could provide a way out of this impasse. Malachi looks forward to this deliverance, for he speaks about the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah. The promised Messiah was the only One who could bridge that widening chasm between the people and their God. (Nelson's, New Illustrated Bible Commentary General Editor Earl D. Radmacher, Th.D.
