TEARING DOWN STRONGHOLDS
TEARING DOWN STRONGHOLDS
Pulling Down What Exalts Itself Against the Knowledge of God
Pulling Down What Exalts Itself Against the Knowledge of God
Text: 2 Corinthians 10:3–5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,” (NKJV)
INTRODUCTION — The Invisible War for the Mind
INTRODUCTION — The Invisible War for the Mind
THE WAR YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU WERE FIGHTING
THE WAR YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU WERE FIGHTING
Beloved family, before we talk about strongholds, we must understand something vital:
You are not failing because you lack effort.
You are not defeated because you lack faith.
Many believers struggle—not because they don’t love God—but because the enemy has been whispering lies in places God intended to reign with truth.
The greatest battles in the Christian life are not fought in public arenas. They are fought in the private chambers of the mind—in thoughts no one hears, assumptions no one questions, and inner conversations no one corrects.
Paul writes to believers who are saved, Spirit-filled, and active in ministry—and yet he tells them plainly: “You are at war.” Not with people. Not with circumstances. Not with flesh and blood. But with ideas, arguments, imaginations, and internal fortresses that resist the knowledge of God.
Some of you love Jesus deeply, yet your thoughts still accuse you.
Some worship freely, yet carry silent fear.
Some serve faithfully, yet believe you are unworthy, overlooked, or beyond repair.
And the Lord says today:
“You are not broken—you have been battling without the right weapons.”
Strongholds are not proof of God’s absence; they are evidence of an unfinished renovation. God has already redeemed your spirit, but He is now calling you to reclaim your mind.
This is not a message of condemnation—this is a message of compassion and authority. The Holy Spirit does not expose strongholds to shame us, but to free us. He does not point out walls to mock us, but to show us that He is ready to tear them down.
Today is not about learning information.
Today is about liberation.
The same power that rolled the stone away from the tomb is present to roll stones away from your thinking. The same truth that set captives free in Scripture is alive and active now. The same Jesus who said, “It is finished,” is standing before every fortified lie and declaring, “This ends today.”
So open your heart.
Lower your defenses.
Let the Word search places you’ve learned to protect.
Because when truth enters, strongholds must fall.
POINT 1 — STRONGHOLDS ARE BUILT IN THE MIND, NOT THE MUSCLE
POINT 1 — STRONGHOLDS ARE BUILT IN THE MIND, NOT THE MUSCLE
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.” (2 Corinthians 10:3)
A stronghold is not merely a sinful habit—it is the belief system that protects the habit.
In biblical times, a stronghold was a fortified city built on high ground, surrounded by walls, guarded gates, and watchmen. Spiritually, strongholds are fortified thoughts that resist God’s truth.

A person may stop drinking, but still believe, “I’m weak.”
They may leave an abusive relationship, but still think, “I deserve this.”
The behavior changed—but the stronghold remained.

Romans 12:2 — Transformation happens by the renewing of the mind
Proverbs 23:7 — “As he thinks in his heart, so is he”
Ephesians 4:23 — “Be renewed in the spirit of your mind”
Truth: Satan doesn’t need to control your life if he can control your thinking.
POINT 2 — STRONGHOLDS EXALT THEMSELVES AGAINST THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
POINT 2 — STRONGHOLDS EXALT THEMSELVES AGAINST THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
“…every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God…” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Strongholds are not neutral thoughts—they are rebellious thoughts. They elevate human reasoning, pain, experience, fear, or tradition above what God has spoken.
Anything that contradicts God’s Word—even if it feels logical or emotional—is a high thing that must come down.
Modern Strongholds
Modern Strongholds
“This is just how I am.”
“God understands why I won’t forgive.”
“I’ve gone too far.”
“That worked for them, but not for me.”

Isaiah 55:8–9 — God’s thoughts are higher than ours
Jeremiah 17:9 — The heart is deceitful
John 8:32 — Truth brings freedom
Truth: Strongholds survive because they are defended, not because they are true.
POINT 3 — STRONGHOLDS ARE SUSTAINED BY AGREEMENT
POINT 3 — STRONGHOLDS ARE SUSTAINED BY AGREEMENT
Strongholds do not exist merely because the enemy suggested a lie—but because we agreed with it.
Satan cannot build without permission.

A child hears repeatedly, “You’ll never amount to anything.”
Years later, the voice still speaks—though the parent is long gone.
The stronghold is no longer external; it is internal.

Scriptural Support
Genesis 3:1–6 — Eve fell by agreeing with deception
Job 3:25 — “The thing I greatly feared has come upon me”
Proverbs 18:21 — Life and death are in the power of the tongue
Truth: Agreement gives lies legal ground. Repentance revokes it.
POINT 4 — GOD’S WEAPONS ARE SPIRITUAL, NOT PSYCHOLOGICAL
POINT 4 — GOD’S WEAPONS ARE SPIRITUAL, NOT PSYCHOLOGICAL
“The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God…” (2 Corinthians 10:4)
Paul does not dismiss logic—but logic alone cannot demolish spiritual fortresses.
The weapons God provides include:
The Word of God
Prayer
The authority of Christ
The Holy Spirit
Faith-filled declaration

Hebrews 4:12 — The Word pierces soul and spirit
Ephesians 6:17–18 — Sword of the Spirit and prayer
Zechariah 4:6 — Not by might, but by the Spirit
Truth: You don’t negotiate with strongholds—you demolish them.
POINT 5 — TEARING DOWN IS AN ACTIVE, INTENTIONAL PROCESS
POINT 5 — TEARING DOWN IS AN ACTIVE, INTENTIONAL PROCESS
“Casting down arguments… bringing every thought into captivity…” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Paul’s language is aggressive:
Casting down
Pulling down
Taking captive
This is not passive Christianity.

Practical Steps
Practical Steps
Identify the lie
Renounce agreement with it
Replace it with Scripture

Truth: Victory belongs to believers who refuse mental neutrality.
POINT 6 — STRONGHOLDS FALL WHEN CHRIST IS OBEYED
POINT 6 — STRONGHOLDS FALL WHEN CHRIST IS OBEYED
“…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
The goal is not positive thinking—it is Christ-centered thinking.
Freedom comes when thoughts submit to who Christ is and what He has done, not how we feel.

POINT 7 — A RENEWED MIND PRODUCES A TRANSFORMED LIFE
POINT 7 — A RENEWED MIND PRODUCES A TRANSFORMED LIFE
When the stronghold falls, the fruit changes.
Peace replaces anxiety
Identity replaces insecurity
Faith replaces fear
Obedience replaces compromise

CONCLUSION — TODAY THE WALLS COME DOWN
CONCLUSION — TODAY THE WALLS COME DOWN
Beloved, the Holy Spirit is not asking you to manage your strongholds—He is calling you to destroy them.
What lie has spoken louder than God’s Word?
What thought has gone unchallenged for too long?
Today, the weapons of God are in your hands.
Today, the authority of Christ is available.
Today, the prison doors are open.
ALTAR CALL — TEARING DOWN STRONGHOLDS
ALTAR CALL — TEARING DOWN STRONGHOLDS
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ,
We repent for agreeing with lies that exalted themselves above Your truth.
We renounce fear, shame, pride, unbelief, and deception.
We take every thought captive and submit it to Christ.
Let the strongholds fall.
Let the truth reign.
Let freedom come.
Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
Amen.
