THE WHY
THE WHY
Acts 2:42 gives us a road map as to how the church lived in Pauls era.
A Spirit-filled community marked by devotion, love, and mission
The reality is : we become what we behold 2 Corinthians 3:18: "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." (ESV)
We need to understand that we as the church have been given authority to shift the atmosphere everywhere we go, to brightly shine in the world, reflecting the glory of God. If that is not happening, we need to ask ourselves, are we distracted and preoccupied, are we beholding the world and lesser things instead of beholding the glory of the Lord and as a result reflecting worldliness rather than Godliness. This happens a lot easier than you would think. It requires crucifying/starving the flesh in order that our spirit might have more exposure in the presence of God and as a consequence grow. What you choose to feed will grow stronger. Though it’s simple to counteract in theory, it’s difficult to follow through in practice.
THE FRAMEWORK OF ACTS
THE FRAMEWORK OF ACTS
There’s seven things mentioned in this verse that we’ve always focused on as a ministry
Teach
Fellowship
Break Bread
Pray
Gather
Disciple
Generosity
1. TEACH
1. TEACH
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…” (v.42)
Grounded in Scripture and truth
Learning God’s Word , to be transformed, not just informed
Imagine a gardener who tends to their plants with care, watering them daily and ensuring they have the right nutrients. This dedication to growth mirrors what is described in Acts 2:42, where teaching and learning were central. As Christians, we must cultivate our faith with the same diligence, regularly engaging with scripture and sound teaching to help our spiritual lives flourish and bear fruit.
Teaching shapes belief, belief shapes life
Our Commitment:
We are a church anchored in the Word of God
2. FELLOWSHIP (Life Together)
2. FELLOWSHIP (Life Together)
“…and to fellowship…” (v.42)
More than friendship — shared life in Christ
Knowing and being known
Carrying one another’s burdens
Our Commitment:
We pursue authentic, Christ-centered relationships
3. BREAK BREAD
3. BREAK BREAD
“…to the breaking of bread…” (v.42, 46)
Communion and shared meals
Remembering Christ’s sacrifice
Being Joyful, having gratitude, and unity around the table
Our Commitment:
One way we love to accomplish this, is by our monthly meals that we try to accomplish.
4. PRAY (Dependence on God)
4. PRAY (Dependence on God)
“…and to prayer.” (v.42)
Prayer was not occasional, but continual
16 Let joy be your continual feast (in the Aramaic; be joyous in every season). 17 Make your life a prayer. 18 And in the midst of everything be always giving thanks, for this is God’s perfect plan for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Never restrain or put out the fire of the Holy Spirit
Brian Simmons, trans., The Passion Translation (BroadStreet Publishing, 2017), 1 Th 5:16–19.
Prayer. The addressing and petitioning of God. Prayer to a god or gods is a feature of many, if not all, religions, but here attention will be restricted to the biblical teaching and some of its implications. A classic definition of Christian prayer is “an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgement of his mercies” (Westminster Shorter Catechism). Christian prayer is the end product of a long process of change and development in God’s relation to men, as a survey of the biblical data shows.
Walter A. Elwell and Barry J. Beitzel, “Prayer,” in Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, 1988), 1745.
Praying continually, centers our focus and attention on Holy Spirit, fostering an atmosphere that grants him control of our being, empowering us to walk in the direction He’s leading us.
Revival flows from a praying people
I’ve heard a ton people pray for revival, what they mean is, they want to experience the outward corporate manifestation of individual sacrifice and devotion without the sacrifice and devotion.
In other words they want the benefits without the investment.
God has unlocked every area of Himself for us to continually experience renewal/revival in our life. When the church becomes obsessed with Christ the above is a consequence of passionately drawing close to God, INTIMACY is achieved through OBEDIENCE.
3 Or have you forgotten that all of us who were immersed into union with Jesus, the Anointed One, were immersed into union with his death?
4 Sharing in his death by our baptism means that we were co-buried and entombed with him, so that when the Father’s glory raised Christ from the dead, we were also raised with him. We have been co-resurrected with him so that we could be empowered to walk in the freshness of new life. 5 For since we are permanently grafted into him to experience a death like his, then we are permanently grafted into him to experience a resurrection like his and the new life that it imparts.
6 Could it be any clearer that our former identity is now and forever deprived of its power? For we were co-crucified with him to dismantle the stronghold of sin within us, so that we would not continue to live one moment longer submitted to sin’s power.
Brian Simmons, trans., The Passion Translation (BroadStreet Publishing, 2017), Ro 6:3–6.
Our Commitment: We depend on God through , persistent, corporate prayer
