Genesis 24:1–9 KJV 1900
1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 3 And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. 5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. 7 The Lord God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.
Today we begin a study that will be tremendously helpful to every single person here...
Every father, employer, leader of any kind would die for their people to understand this truth...
<<<<Marks of a Godly Servant: A Faithful Servant
We tend to major on speaking about Abraham, Isaac & Jacob and the covenant that God gave to these three and the generations after them...
Matthew 1 - the lineage of Jesus
It mentions “Abraham, Isaac & Jacob”...
The covenant:
Throughout scripture, God gave the covenant to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob...
Many times the Jewish people are referring to “our fathers, Abraham, Isaac & Jacob”...
There is no mention of Eliezar in the lineage of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, but he was crucial to the fuflillment of the scripture...
***No Rebekah means to Jacob***
Just another example in scripture of someone who is absolutely crucial to the completion of God’s master plan that is hardly mentioned...
Think with me:
Genesis 17:19 KJV 1900
19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
**God would tell Abraham to offer Isaac in Genesis 22… (was he worried the covenant would discontinue?)
Abraham was 140 years old at this moment in Genesis 24...
He knew the covenant and that it would continue through Isaac...
Abraham is old...
Isaac is without a wife...
Abraham has been told about this crucial covenant that God made with him and his sons...
Abraham has made many decisions based off the covenant God made with him...
Now he has to entrust this incredibly important task to a faithful servant...
There are times when God reaches down and entrusts the stewardship of His master plan to hands of a faithful servant...
Could you be considered that faithful servant?
One to bear the responsibility of being a piece in the master plan?
Can you be trusted to do your job?
*Let’s look at some marks of a faithful servant:

1. A Faithful Servant is a Gift to the Master

Genesis 24:1 KJV 1900
1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
I believe one of those “blessings” that God blessed Abraham with was a faithful servant...
Someone Abraham could trust and believe would get the job done...
A faithful servant is a gift to any leader...
Joshua was a gift to Moses… he was a faithful servant to Moses and as Moses was dying, he could TRUST that Joshua would get the Children of Israel where they needed to be
Aaron and Hur were gifts to Moses… those faithful men held up the hands of Moses so the Children of Israel could win the battle against the Amalekites
Elisha was a gift to Elijah… Elisha was a faithful servant to Elijah before he became a successor to the prophet
Baruch was a gift to Jeremiah… when others rejected Jeremiah, Baruch was the faithful servant who wrote the words of Jeremiah down
Jonathan was a gift to David… even when Jonathan’s father attempted to kill David, Jonathan was the faithful servant to stay at David’s side
Silas was a gift to Paul… Silas provided Paul a faithful co-laborer to rejoice alongside him and even suffer alongside him as well
Challenge: Why don’t you become a gift to someone in your life by being a faithful servant… or a faithful co-laborer?

2. A Faithful Servant has a History of Trustworthiness

Genesis 24:2 KJV 1900
2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
What is “...all that he had...”?
Genesis 13:2 KJV 1900
2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.
Abraham had great levels of wealth and authority...
Abraham’s servant had a history of being faithful to manage this great wealth for Abraham...
You don’t give someone control of “all you have” unless you really trust them...
Challenge: Do you have a history of trustworthiness?
The reason why Abraham had confidence in Eliezar performing this great task was because he had a history of being trustworthy...
He came through
He completed the task
He didn’t mismanage the assets
Luke 16:10 KJV 1900
10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
God may “prove” us at times to test our level of faithfulness...
If you are not faithfully accomplishing the small things God calls you to in obedience to Him, why would you expect Him to give you bigger things?
Transition:
Abraham’s trust in Eliezar was not just in general obedience...
He was able to trust him in the details...
Genesis 24:3–4 KJV 1900
3 And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
“No wife of the Canaanites”
Go to “my country”
Go to “my kindred”
Abraham had specific marching orders for his faithful servant to follow...
The reason why Abraham gave Eliezar the details is because he knew Eliezar would be diligent to keeping those details...
Remember: this is something that Eliezar would be expected to do without supervision from Abraham...
Abraham needed to be able to trust that he could give it to Eliezar and let it go knowing it would be fulfilled...
A Faithful Servant is a Gift to the Master
A Faithful Servant has a History of Trustworthiness

3. A Faithful Servant Keeps his Word

Genesis 24:9 KJV 1900
9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.

4. A Faithful Servant Shares His Master’s Vision

Eliezar would not have had an opportunity to succeed at this great task had he not shared the vision of Abraham...
Through the text I do not find Eliezar attempting to negotiate the vision of Abraham...
He simply preforms the task faithfully...
As you read through the text, you would find that everything Eliezar did was in response and reinforcement of his master’s vision...
Everything we do should be in response and reinforcement of what God calls us too...
There should be no negotiating God’s vision for our lives...
It should be faithful servant ship to our Master...

Conclusion:

There was a great task that was crucial to the fulfillment of scripture that Abraham needed completed...
God placed a faithful servant in his life to help him complete this monumental task...
It would not have been possible had Eliezar not been a faithful servant...
He’s not in the lineage of Christ in Matthew 1
He’s not listed among “Abraham, Isaac & Jacob”
But without him neither exists...
Are you a gift to God because of your faithful serving?
Do you have a history of trustworthiness?
Do you faithfully keep your word?
Do you share God’s vision and faithfully obey it?
