Opening Question.
Opening Question.
What is something God has promised you that has not fully come to fruition?
ch 9 The Gibeonites make peace with Joshua through deception. In chapter 10 they attacked by other Amorite kings because they made peace.
The Amorites were concerned about Gibeon’s peace with Israel because they feared Israel. Have you ever had someone attack you because you were at peace with their enemies?
Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
So the sun stood still,
And the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge
Upon their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
2. Joshua had enough faith to pray that the sun would stand still. What does it say about his faith in God?What have you wanted to pray for but been afraid to ask for?
And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, that the Lord cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
And do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies, and attack their rear guard. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand.”
3. What do these passages tell us about trusting in God? Did the children have to do any work? How does this correlate with us putting works with our faith? Give an example.
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
4. Joshua 10:25 Joshua once again tells his men to be strong and courageous. What would you pursue if you knew you were in the will of God? Have you sought his will?
5. How does the sun stopping challenge the limitations you have silently placed on God? What have you not asked for because you feel like it won’t happen?
6. What life battles do have that require more involvement from the Lord than strategy from you.
Now Joshua was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed.
7. God gives us all a limited amount of time on this earth. What does this passage tell us about the urgency of finishing Gods work? Should believers slow down or speed up in working for God as they get older? Explain.
8. Because the Israelites failed to drive out all the inhabitants, they would later pay with:
Spiritual corruption and Ba’al worship
Constant skirmish (see Judges)
Cultural compromise. They married into other cultures
The loss of Gods assistance to drive out their enemies
What does this tell us about the importance of obeying God’s word without compromise?
9. Where has a comfortable position prohibited you from obeying God fully?
So the Lord gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it. The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand. Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
10. Reflect on the faithfulness of God in your life? Give an real life-personal example when God proved faithful to His promise.
