13 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.” 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Intro question:
How do you know someone is telling the truth? What assurance do you have that someone is going to keep their word?

What did Abraham’s faith and patience look like?
The charge to us:
12 so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

We are not asked to give our firstborn sons. What does faith and patience for us look like?
What promises have we been given?
Know the promises!
Know our own fears.
Be aware of the temptations that try to provide us with the promises via a shortcut.
Something to wrestle with:
16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

How is God’s promise delivered to Abraham? By means of His promise? or by means of His obedience?
God’s promise was sure! God did not say if you obey… when he promised to bless Abraham.

What is the source of our strong encouragement?
Not in anything changeable, fickle, or wavering like us.
Our strong encouragement, our full assurance of hope is rooted in the character of God and His purpose to bless us in Christ.
The anchor of our hope as Christians:
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

The anchor of our hope?
How does Jesus going before us provide us assurance and hope?
24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
