When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

I am the bread of life
When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
Three groups are in this discourse
The Jews
Jesus had addressed the Jews in the prior verses
The Disciples (v60-66)
The Twelve (v67-71)
The Disciples
They did not say it was hard to understand
They said it was hard to accept
They were disgusted by what he said
But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
“Do you take offense at this?”
offense [ original word means: to appaul resulting in rejection; causing one ot trip or fall]
Concept presented: to cause one to fall into a trap
Therefore, Jesus was asking if the disciples had been led into sin {rejecting God}
“Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?”
What will it take for you to believe?
His death and ressurection?
His Ascention?
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
Jesus addresses the blunter of the literal intepretation over his flesh and blood
He affirmed the use of them as rich metaphors
Jesus’ words undermine the teachings of the RC communion, making the same mistake as these “disciples”
“But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
Jesus knew those who were true believers
And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
A true believer is one who has been granted that believe by the Father
Consider the responses to different types of ministry and then to the true Gospel
Only those who God has choosen will response to the true Gospel
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
They would not accept the realiy of the Gospel message
They were not fit for the Kingdom of God
So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
Jesus speaks now to the twelve choosen disciples
Jesus provides opportunity for the twelve to give testamony of their faith
Jesus words it with full opportunity to leave
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Peter who so is often criticised for his responses now declares one of the most glorious of answers
These twelve disciples had the night before witnessed Jesus walking on water in the storm
Jesus had commented “Oh you of little faith, why do you doubt”
A believers response:
“Lord, to whom shall we go?”
man is so constitued (human nature) that he must go to someone
he cannot stand by himself
Peter implies this: “There is no one else to go to; no one who satisfies the yearning of the heart.”
“You have the words of eternal life”
Peter knows that the words of Jesus are more than mere sounds or dead utterances.
They are vital and dynamic, full of spirit and life, and a means unto salvation, the means of grace
“and we have believed, and have come to know”
belief is a process that is ongoing
maturing along the way
“that you are the Holy One of God.”
Peter makes the clear testimony that Jesus is the Messiah
Jesus belongs to God and is appointed by God
Peter (and the twelve) begin to recognise the truth that Jesus will later proclaim in his ministry
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.
Peter spoke believing he represented the twelve
But Jesus affirms that is one amongst them who his statement does not represent
a devil - original term meant slander of accuser
We must avoid as some are in the habit of doing:
seeing the devil or demons in all problems
seeing them within the lives of individuals
creating a terrifying fear of the devil and demons
yes they are real, yes they are active but the true believer has not fear of them
our focus should be entirely on The LORD
we have an awareness of them and their actions but our concern of them should be limited in scope
Simply those who reject God are influenced by their sinful natures, and incline their ear to the Devil and his followers
Judas had opportunity to leave, and reject Jesus teaching
yet he remained seemingly in order to slander Jesus and be his accuser
Final Thoughts
Do we recognise Jesus for who he is?
What will it take for you to believe?
Hasn’t Jesus fulfilled that already?
