A Departing Master
A Departing Master
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
look ahead to verse 36. they cannot come now, but will follow afterward
Is this referring to simply Christ’s death, or also his resurrection and ascension? The “glory” in v31 is the cross. the glory then would then be made manifest in the resurrection and glorification of the son? Daniel 7 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
It cannot be just death, it is a parting from this world, which is initially death but is proceeded by life and ascension
Potential contrast between the Jews and the little children (Jn 1:11-12)
A Departing Command
A Departing Command
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
Love one another, no longer as you love yourself, but as Jesus loved you.
How did Jesus love?
Washed their feet (became a servant)
rebuked with grace
would soon lay down his life for them
The love of Christ compels us (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)
it is not only the standard, but also the driving force (Luke 7:47)
A Departed Disciple
A Departed Disciple
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
A disciple is not recognized by his proximity to Christ (as seen by Judas)
He’s recognized by the love of his master
Judas was controlled by a love for money and for what Christ could do for him.
Disciples are controlled by what Christ HAS DONE for them and loves in response
