Week 3 — Love One Another
Text: 1 John 3:16–18
Introduction
We live in a world full of good intentions and empty words. We promise, post, and express concern—but often stop short of action.
John confronts that kind of love head-on.
“Let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:18)
Big Idea: Real love moves from compassion to action.
Threaded Story (Illustration): “The Empty Chair”
[Cue: Introduce early, return often]
Picture a family dinner table with one chair always empty. Everyone knows who used to sit there. Everyone feels the absence—but no one talks about it.
That empty chair represents a need that’s noticed but never addressed.
Point 1 — Love Is Defined by Sacrifice
“By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us…” (1 John 3:16)
Love is measured not by convenience but by cost.
Cross References:
Mark 10:45 — Jesus came to give His life.
Philippians 2:5–8 — Christ’s humility and sacrifice.
[Story Cue: Empty Chair]
That empty chair isn’t filled by sympathy. It’s filled when someone pulls up another chair and steps into the gap.
Transition
If love is defined by sacrifice, it must also be expressed in real life.
Point 2 — Love Responds to Real Needs
“If anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need…” (1 John 3:17)
John shifts from theology to everyday reality.
Cross References:
James 2:15–17 — Faith without works is dead.
Luke 10:33–35 — The Good Samaritan.
Love that only feels is incomplete.
[Story Cue: Empty Chair]
Everyone sees the empty chair. Love is the person who finally asks, “Why is no one sitting there—and what can I do about it?”
Transition
But John goes even further—he challenges our language.
Point 3 — Love Must Move Beyond Words
“Little children, let us not love in word or talk…” (1 John 3:18)
Words matter—but words without action hollow out love.
Cross References:
Matthew 25:35–40 — Love shown through action.
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 — Love over empty expressions.
[Story Cue: Empty Chair]
Talking about the empty chair doesn’t change the table. Action does.
Conclusion
The gospel doesn’t call us to notice needs—it calls us to meet them.
Call to Action:
Identify the “empty chair” God is showing you.
Step into sacrificial love.
Weekly Challenge: Serve someone sacrificially this week—without seeking recognition.
Closing Prayer (Both Weeks):
“Lord, make us conduits of Your love—not collectors. Help us live what we believe, and love as we have been loved. Amen.”
Week 3 — Love One Another
Text: 1 John 3:16–18
Big Truth: True love goes beyond words and is revealed through sacrificial action.
Devotion Summary:
Jesus defines love by laying down His life. In the same way, our faith becomes visible when we love others through tangible, sacrificial actions that meet real needs.
TableTalk Questions:
How do actions reveal whether love is genuine?
What are practical ways believers can love like Christ?
Where do you see opportunities for our church to love more intentionally?
Application:
Are there needs you’ve noticed but ignored?
What keeps people from moving from compassion to action?
Challenge for the Week:
Serve someone sacrificially—give time, resources, or energy without seeking recognition.
Prayer Focus:
Ask God to open your eyes to needs around you and give you courage to respond
