1 Peter 3:1-7
Our society isn’t very good at marriage. We have books on books and podcasts on podcasts of advice because marriages are floundering…
Transition: Since aligning ourselves with God’s design for marriage will be the healthiest thing for us, we need to know what the Bible says on the topic…
Main Idea: As Christians, the gospel should guide our marriages
Main Idea: As Christians, the gospel should guide our marriages
1. Wives, submit to your husband’s leadership (1 Peter 3:1-6)
1. Wives, submit to your husband’s leadership (1 Peter 3:1-6)
Explanation: Peter commands wives to be subject to their husbands. How does this relate to the gospel? The gospel produces an inner work in each of us. For wives, he points back to Sarah, who hoped in God, which enabled her to submit to her husband without fear and anxiety. Now, submitting doesn’t mean being a tradwife, barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen; it means being so at peace with God that you’re willing to allow your imperfect husband to lead you and your family. And if your husband isn’t saved, this could be the means God uses to save him…
Illustration: Ruth…
Application: Work in partnership with your husband, but allow him to make the final calls and lead your family…
2. Husbands, honor your wives (1 Peter 3:7)
2. Husbands, honor your wives (1 Peter 3:7)
Explanation: Peter commands husbands to honor their wives. By “weaker vessel,” Peter is pointing out the reality that women, on average, are weaker than men, so men have the capacity to dominate over them. Peter says, “Don’t do that!” Again, this is based on the gospel, since wives are equal participants in the grace of life. Moreover, if you don’t honor your wife, God won’t bother listening to your prayers…
Application: Don’t be a jerk to your wife—honor her!…
Conclusion: Is your marriage relationship guided by the gospel?
