1. Introduction – What Is “Good”? (3–4 minutes)
1. Introduction – What Is “Good”? (3–4 minutes)
Good afternoon everyone!
I want to ask you a question.
Raise your hand if you like good things.
(Wait for hands.)
What are some good things?
Ice cream?
Recess?
Playing with friends?
Those are good things. But today, we’re not talking about things that taste good or feel good. Today we’re talking about GOODNESS. And goodness is something the Bible says God wants to grow inside us.
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
God gives us a new heart so we can live His way!
2. The Fruit of the Spirit (4–5 minutes)
2. The Fruit of the Spirit (4–5 minutes)
The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:22:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness…”
What is this passage called kids?
That’s called the Fruit of the Spirit.
Important question: Does fruit grow because it tries really hard?
No!
Fruit grows because it is connected to a healthy tree.
In the same way:
When we belong to Jesus
When God’s Spirit lives in us
God grows good fruit in our lives
One of those fruits and the fruit of the Spirit we are covering this month is goodness.
3. Defining Goodness (3–4 minutes)
3. Defining Goodness (3–4 minutes)
Let’s define goodness in a way everyone can understand.
Say this with me:
“Goodness means choosing what is right because God lives in me.”
(Repeat together once or twice.)
Goodness is not:
only being good when someone is watching
only being good when it’s easy
only being good so we don’t get in trouble
Kids, goodness is not just:
being nice when it is easy
behaving when teachers are watching
Or doing good things to get praise
Goodness is choosing what is right because God lives in you.
Even when:
no one is watching
it’s hard to do.
And definitely when you don’t feel like being good.
4. Object Lesson – “The Light Inside” (6–7 minutes)
4. Object Lesson – “The Light Inside” (6–7 minutes)
Object Lesson
Object Lesson
(Hold up flashlight.)
What is this?
Right—a flashlight.
What happens when I turn it on?
It shines light.
Now watch this.
(Put the flashlight inside the bag and close it.)
Is the light still on inside?
Yes.
Can you see it very well?
Not really.
Teaching the Point
Teaching the Point
Here’s the lesson.
When you believe in Jesus:
God’s Spirit lives inside you
His goodness is like a light in your heart
But sometimes:
we hide that light
we make wrong choices
we let sin cover it up
Goodness is when we let God’s light shine out.
(Take flashlight out and shine it.)
When God’s goodness shines, it looks like:
telling the truth
helping someone who is hurting
obeying parents and teachers
being kind when others are mean
We shine not because we are perfect,
but because God lives in us.

Explain the Verse (Kid-Friendly)
Evil means wrong things—being mean, lying, hurting others.
Overcome means don’t let it win.
This verse means:
When someone does wrong to you,
you don’t copy it.
You let goodness win instead.

Goodness is not about being perfect.
Goodness is about letting God’s Spirit lead you.
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
If you are able to read, you should read the Bible. If you cannot read super good ask your parents to read to you.
