Good morning.
Let Us Continue to Worship God
Psalm 105:8–11 LSB
8 He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded for a thousand generations, 9 Which He cut with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac. 10 Then He confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant, 11 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan As the portion of your inheritance,”
Romans 9:1–5 LSB
1 I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, 5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
Introduction: Romans 9:1-5 Sharing the Gospel with Those Who Hate Your Message
Romans 1 - Condemnation
2-5 Justification
6-8 Sanctification
9-11 are perhaps three of the most important chapters in all of scripture in terms of what they teach.
If ch1 is condemnation with the power of the gospel, 2-5 is justification with the presence of faith, 6-8 is sanctification with the power of the Holy Spirit,
9-11 is evangelization with the presence of sovereign grace
So, with these verses we start a whole new section in the book of Romans. Romans 9, 10, and 11 stand as one unit and address a monumental question that Paul must answer. The question is this, if God is sovereign in salvation, if God chooses those whom He will save from before the foundation of the world, and if God irresistibly calls to faith in Jesus Christ every one of His chosen ones, as we just saw in Romans 8, then why are God’s chosen people, Israel, still in unbelief? That’s the question on the table. If God is really sovereign and has chosen people for salvation, then why are God’s chosen people not saved? That is the question, and Paul will take now three chapters to address this monumental question, and in these three chapters there is extraordinary truth for us to know and to have.
(1) The passion of Paul
Romans 9:1–3 LSB
1 I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh,
Truth - Paul’s claim
You've gone to the same church for years. You're comfortable. You love the music, the sermons, the friends you've made. And suddenly people with long hair and bare feet are walking on the new carpet and choosing to sit on the floor instead of in the pews. And when pastor Chuck asks them to help with the music you just about go crazy. And when you hear that there's going to be a meeting about solving this "problem" you go. And it's at this meeting that you realize the problem isn't the new people. It's your heart...
Romans Accursed

Paul loves his people so much that he would be willing to give up his salvation for his brothers and sisters, his fellow Jews. I cannot imagine too many things that I would be unwilling to do to see my friends come to Christ, but I have never said I would be willing to trade my salvation for theirs. I do not think I have that much love for anybody, but the apostle did.

The word Paul uses is anathema, which means he would willingly place himself under the very curse of God and be delivered to total destruction if by doing so his people would know Christ. Anathema is the word Paul uses when he writes to the Galatians as they were being seduced away from the true gospel: “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be anathema” (

(3) The sovereignty of the triune God
Romans 9:5 LSB
5 and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
the incarnate God, the sovereign God, the eternally blessed God
Amen - truth!
The Shepherd who has laid down His life for the sheep, who calls you by name, who never abandons His flock or allows His sheep to perish, preserve you in all the attacks of the enemy, hold you steady in all your sorrows, and keep you faithful in all your temptations. Amen.
The Lord’s Table
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 LSB
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was being betrayed took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.
