Ordination of Pat Cummings to the office of Deacon.

Notes
Transcript
1 Timothy 3:8–13 “8 Deacons, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not hypocritical, not drinking a lot of wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons. 11 Wives, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything. 12 Deacons are to be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households competently. 13 For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”

I. The Constitutional Preamble

"Beloved, Christ the Head of the Church has instituted the office of Deacon as a general aid to the people of God. We are here because we have observed in Brother PAT CUMMINGS the evidence of the graces and gifts which Scripture requires. Through prayerful waiting, careful examination, and a three-fourths majority vote, this local church has recognized the call of Christ upon him."

II. The Vows of Office

The Word: "Do you conscientiously affirm your agreement with the Word of God as the only infallible rule of faith and practice?"
The Confession: "Do you conscientiously affirm your agreement with the London Baptist Confession of 1689 and promise to notify the Elders privately should your convictions respecting these standards ever change?"
The Constitution: "Do you promise to fulfill the duties of this office—administering mercy, benevolence, and the practical affairs of this church—in cooperation with and under the oversight of the eldership?"

III. The Congregational Charge (The "Charge to the Body")

"Members of The Valley Remnant Church, your Constitution states that you have a 'solemn obligation' to recognize the gifts of Christ. Having done so by your vote, I charge you now:
Protect the Elders' Priority: You have set this man apart so that your Elders are not distracted from prayer and the ministry of the Word. When the Deacon handles the 'business affairs' or 'maintenance of facilities,' support him, so that the Word of God may continue to increase among us.
Submit to His Administration: In those practical matters where he has been given responsibility, follow his lead with a cheerful spirit. He serves to bring order and efficiency to our community.
Respond to the Call of Mercy: When he identifies needs of benevolence and mercy within this body, be the hands that join his. Do not let his office be a lonely one; let it be the catalyst for our collective love."

IV. The Installation (Laying on of Hands)

The Prayer:"Lord God, we thank You for giving gifts to men. On behalf of this local church, we lay hands on Brother [Name]. We install him as a Deacon of this body. Grant him a double portion of Your Spirit. Give him a heart of mercy for the poor, a mind of wisdom for the church's business, and according to Your promise in 1 Timothy 3:8–13, grant him 'great confidence in the faith' as he serves us well. For the glory of Christ and the peace of His Church, Amen."
