It is Finished

Text: John 19:17–30

I. The King Is Lifted Up (vv. 17–22)

The message of Jesus’ Lordship is public. vs 19

Pilate thought he was being sarcastic. He didn’t know he was being prophetic.

God can, and will use any means to proclaim His Gospel.

The message of Jesus’ Lordship is global. vs 20

These were the most often spoken languages of the day in this area. Pilate was basically making sure that EVERYONE heard this proclammation.

The message of Jesus’ Lordship is unchanging. vs 22

This literally means, “What I have said cannot be changed.”

Again, pilate didn’t know it, but his words were truer than he suspected. because the truth is, Jesus IS the messiah, Jesus IS the anointed, Jesus IS the greatest hope we have against the greatest enemy we will ever know, Jesus IS victorious, Jesus IS on the THRONE!!!!

And nothing. And no one. Can change that.

Jesus is the King, and everything falls under his authority.

II. The Scriptures Are Fulfilled (vv. 23–24, 28–29)

Soldiers gamble for His clothes (Psalm 22:18).

Jesus says, “I thirst,” fulfilling Scripture (Psalm 69:21).

We even see in verse 32 where Jesus’ bones aren’t broken, it’s in fulfillment of (Psalm 34:20)

The crucifixion wasn’t something that was happening TO Jesus. It was the sacrifice that was orchestrated BY Him.

In Jesus, God’s promises are fulfilled.

III. The Work Is Finished (vv. 25–30)

Jesus has final authority

This is the same tense that Pilate used. Only thing is, Jesus actually has the authority to make this stick.

Jesus has removed the stain of death

Exodus 12:22 - The death angel would passover, blood spread by hyssop

Psalm 51:7 - cleanse me with hyssop

When someone saw hyssop, they associated it with the death stain being cleansed, and death being withheld from them.

Jesus paid it all

The debt has been paid.

Jesus is in authority over everything, He keeps His promises, and He will not stop until His work is complete.
