Are Dull Of Hearing

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Five: Pilgrims Should Make Progress (Hebrews 5:11–6:20)

Warren Wirsby “Most Christians. They are between Egypt and Canaan—out of the place of danger, but not yet into the place of rest and rich inheritance,” he replied. “They are between Good Friday and Easter Sunday—saved by the blood but not yet enjoying newness of resurrection life.

V 10
The context here is Jesus our High Priest but the author here has added the statement in the order of Melchizedek
He wants to go deeper here but the people are not mature enough to hear
the people have slid back they have become dull of hearing
V 11
not only have they slid back but they are severely immature in their knowledge of Jesus
they are stuck at the learnings of the gospel they are baby milk drinkers
V 12
Adrian Rogers on milk - Do you know what milk is? Hey, folks, milk is just predigested food. That’s what milk is. Do you know about all the feeding that some people get is what they get when they come to church? Do you know what a sermon is? It’s predigested food. That is, I take the Word of God, chew on it, assimilate it, digest it, and then give it back to you. And so, that’s about all that some folks get. And, no wonder they’re not growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. They come to church on Sunday—get five gallons of milk. A baby is not supposed to have five gallons; it’s supposed to get some every day. Well, of course, you can’t swallow five gallons, but you take all you can get. And then, you know, you get burped on the way out by an usher, and that’s it. My dear friend, there is so much more. Here’s what was frustrating to the writer of the book of Hebrews. He said, “Oh, there is so much that I want to tell you.”
milk drinkers are in between getting saved and living by faith
they are saved but don’t live a life that is abundant
a baby cant catch a baseball but just lay there and look up at the swirly things
a baby can’t enjoy eating brussel sprouts
the Daily Bread is milk
this sermon to you today is milk
like Adirane Rogers said I was the one who ate this food, studied over it, chewed on it, and gave it to you in milk form.
the people that the author is speaking to are ones that don’t study on their own.
they come to church on Sunday and think that they are all done for the week
V 12
you aught to be teachers

Progressive Sanctification

we have looked before at Positional sanctification
where we are set a part for salvation
where the Holy Spirit gives us new life in Christ
but there is progress toward being Christ like
this progress is is a two lane highway
the Holy Spirit is in one lane. you are in the other
the Holy Spirit will lead, teach, and illuminate you
you have to do your part also
the teacher at the head of the class can do his best to teach, but if you don’t apply yourself then the consequences is you won’t learn
V 11-12
these people are not applying.
their morning devotional is the daily bread which is good for a new believer. a milk drinker
we need to progress past the milk only stage
we should be able to look back on our lives and see the progression that the Holy Spirit has taken us in
Psalm 1:1–3 LSB
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the way of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of Yahweh, And in His law he meditates day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
to meditate- you have a bite of a good juicy steak you chew on it, you savor it, you enjoy it you might tell others about it. tell them where they too can get their own
now you throw a piece of steak to a dog and he will gulp it down faster than a heart beat
we need to meditate on the word. as we meditate the Holy Spirit illuminates
Progressive sanctification is just like when we were saved
the Father chose and adopted us
the Holy Spirit regenerated made us a new creation
Jesus redeemed by giving His life in the most cruel torture
our part was to believe. our part was the easy part
its the same with progressive sanctification
Jesus says my yoke is light
but a lot of peoples attitudes are let go and Let God
just drift through life and let God do what He does
V 13-14
can you spot a counterfeit
can you listen to a sermon and discern right from false teachings?
the Holy Spirit wants more than anything to teach you about Jesus
but are you willing to open Gods word and apply yourself more than a drink of milk

Leaving Elementary

V 1-2
The author here wants to jumpstart their desire to learn
to move them from milk to steak
from the kindergarten of salvation knowledge to the knowledge of living a life of faith
the first thing is to repent
Lord I have been being lazy with your word. all that I have wanted is milk I have wanted to rely on other people to tell me what Your word says.
Father I want to turn from this wicked way and study your word for myself.
You need to make a deliberate decision that this is what you want to do
V 12 you aught to be teachers
this is part of maturing to first learn, then pass on what you have learned
come to church Sunday morning ready to pass on something that was learned this pass week
as the Holy Spirit is teaching you pray and look for opportunities to pass on this new found knowledge
you are going to find in conversations throughout the week that the Holy Spirit will open doors for you to easily walk through
find out how good it is to walk in faith
to walk alongside the Holy Spirit
