John 15
Exodus 16
INTRODUCTION
Two weeks ago, we saw that abiding is maintained through the Word.
It is the channel Christ uses to cleanse us, shape us, and keep us close.
But now we need to answer another question:
How is abiding lived out in real life?
Not in theory.
Not in sermons.
Not in just the quiet moments,
But in:
Monday mornings
Tuesday pressures
Wednesday worries
Thursday fatigue
Friday temptation
Saturday distractions
How do you abide there?
God answers that question in Exodus 16.
Before Israel ever learned to trust God long-term,
they had to learn to trust Him daily.
And before believers learn to abide deeply,
they must learn to abide daily.
God never designed the Christian life
to be carried in one heavy load.
Christ said to take up our cross DAILY and follow Him.
He designed it to be lived one day at a time.
There is nothing wrong with having a vison or a goal
but I believe that is why many Christians fail at this life, because they are focoused on the long term and not the daily abiding with Christ.
If we are going to succed at abiding with Him we must remember that He is our daily bread, our fountain of living water, our high tower, our cleft in the rock and anchor in the time of a storm.
We must learn that abiding is a daily thing.
Lets go to the Lord in prayer and I pray that we can leave out of here understanding
And the first thing we must see is this…
I. ABIDING IS DAILY DEPENDENCE
I. ABIDING IS DAILY DEPENDENCE
(John 15:4–5 | Exodus 16:4, 20)
Jesus said:
“Abide in me.”
Not occasionally.
Not emotionally.
but Continuously.
And then He explains:
“Without me ye can do nothing.”
Remeber A branch has no life in itself.
No strength by its self to weather a storm
No power in itself to produce fruit
No life without the vine
Everything comes from the vine.
To abide is to depend.
A. God Designed His People to be Dependent
(Exodus 16:4)
“I will rain bread from heaven… every day
day by day!
God could have given Israel a year’s supply.
He did not.
He gave enough for today.
Because dependence keeps the relationship alive.
If He had given them everything at once, it would have overwhelmed them.
He knew they could carry one day.
So He gave them one day.
Morning by morning.
Grace was fresh.
Strength was new.
Provision was sufficient.
And Jesus says:
That is how life with Me works.
Christ taught us, He said when ye pray, pray in this manner: Our Father which art in heaven, hollwed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our DAILY bread.
It daily. we go to Him daily
for He loadeth us daily with benefits.
A. God Designed His People to be Dependent
B. Self-Dependence Always Leads to Spiritual Decay
(Exodus 16:20)
Some Israelites said,
“We’ll take care of ourselves.”
“We’ll store it.”
“We won’t need to trust God tomorrow.”
So they kept the manna.
And it rotted.
What they saved spoiled.
What they trusted in failed.
Why?
Because God never intended His people
to live independently of Him.
John 15:5 shows reliance on Christ.
Exodus 16:20 shows reliance on self.
One brings life.
The other brings decay.
One says,
“Lord, I need You.”
The other says,
“I’ve got this.”
A. God Designed His People to be Dependent
B. Self-Dependence Always Leads to Spiritual Decay
C. Daily Dependence Must Be Personally Chosen
(John 15:5)
A branch cannot say,
“I’ll live off yesterday’s supply.”
“I’ll survive on past prayers.”
“I’ll store enough strength.”
If the branch decides to stop the flow
death begins.
Some believers are not rebelling.
They are replacing dependence with self-reliance.
They still believe.
They still attend.
They still serve.
But they are running on themselves.
On religious discipline.
On religious habit.
On religious experience.
And slowly, the flow dries up.
Application
Some of you are exhausted because you are trying to live tomorrow today.
You’re carrying worries God never gave you.
He didn’t give you next year’s strength.
He gave you today’s grace.
Abiding means this:
Every day I say, “Lord, I cannot do this without You.”
II. ABIDING IS DAILY FAITHFULNESS
II. ABIDING IS DAILY FAITHFULNESS
(John 15:7 | Exodus 16:21)
“They gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating.”
A. They Had to Show Up
Notice: God gave it daily.
But they still had to gather it.
God provided.
They participated.
Grace was free.
But faithfulness was required.
Manna did not fall into their tents.
They had to get up.
They had to go out.
They had to gather.
Before breakfast.
Before work.
Before distractions.
Because abiding is not a passive afterthought
It is practiced reality.
A. They Had to Show Up
B. They Had to Stay Consistent
They could not gather on Monday and live on it until Wednesday.
If they tried, they would go hungry.
Because yesterday’s obedience could not replace today’s.
They had a choice every morning.
Go out.
Or stay in.
Gather.
Or neglect.
And if they chose not to go, God was not going to place manna on their table.
Jesus says the same thing:
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you…”
That means His Word must be welcomed.
Returned to.
Stayed with.
Faithfulness is not perfection.
It is persistence.
Not,
“I never miss.”
But,
“I always return.”
Not,
“I’m always strong.”
But,
“I keep coming back.”
Some days they gathered with joy.
Some days with fatigue.
Some days with heavy hearts.
But they gathered anyway.
Because consistency protects intimacy.
Many believers are not struggling with doctrine. They are struggling with obedience.
Prayer that used to be daily
is now occasional.
Scripture that used to be central
is now optional.
Worship that used to be passionate
is now passive.
And slowly, the fire cools.
Application
Faithfulness is choosing God
when nobody is watching.
It is opening the Word
when you feel nothing.
It is praying
when you feel dry.
It is worshiping
when you feel tired.
And every faithful step
keeps you close.
III. ABIDING IS DAILY RENEWAL
III. ABIDING IS DAILY RENEWAL
(John 15:9–10 | Exodus 16:4)
“I will rain bread… every morning.”
Notice:
A. It is God Who Renews
Notice who is speaking:
“I will…”
We must be active in abiding, but God is the One who renews.
We obey. He sustains.
We show up. He fills.
Moses did not renew them.
Yesterday’s effort did not renew them.
Their discipline did not renew them.
God renewed them.
If we are going to abide faithfully, we must trust the faithfulness of God.
When He says, “I will,” He means it.
“I will never leave you.”
“I will send the Comforter.”
“I will be with you always.”
We can rest in His promises.
A. It is God who Renews
B. It is God who Refreshes
“I will rain bread...”
God did not say I will give you bread
He said I will RAIN bread
That word rain literally means to rain upon
You ever been out working on a hot summer day and one of those NC summer rain storms pop up on you?
How refreshing is that?
That is what God means here
You tarried all day and worked hard.
You have gotten your physical rest with sleep
but it is, the Great I Am that will give you your spiritual renewal
God did not say,
“I will rain bread occasionally.”
He said,
“Every morning.”
Because every day brings new demands.
New battles.
New burdens.
New temptations.
So God sends new grace.
Yesterday’s manna would melt in the sun.
Yesterday’s supply would not last.
Why?
Because God never intended for yesterday’s experience to replace today’s relationship.
Then we see
A. It is God Who Renews
B. it is God Who Refreshes
C. It is God Who Restores
Jesus said,
“Continue in my love.”
That word “continue” is the same greek word as “abide”:
So Jesus is saying
Remain.
Stay.
Keep living in my love!
Love must be renewed.
Trust must be renewed.
Surrender must be renewed.
Every day:
the heart wants to drift.
The mind wanders.
The flesh resists.
So every day,
the soul must return.
Some believers are living on spiritual photographs.
“I remember when…”
“I used to feel…”
“There was a time…”
But memories are not meals.
Testimonies are not nourishment.
Past encounters are not present power.
God is not saying,
“Remember Me.”
He is saying,
“Abide in Me.”
Again.
Today.
Now.
Application
Renewal happens
when we refuse to live on leftovers.
When we say,
“Lord, fill me again.”
“Teach me again.”
“Break me again.”
“Use me again.”
Fresh love.
Fresh obedience.
Fresh joy.
Fresh surrender.
That is abiding.
Conclusion
Conclusion
So here is where the Lord brings us today.
One day at a time
One choice at a time
One step at a time
Depend on Him, ON THE VINE
Jesus is not asking you to manage your whole life
He is asking you to remain today.
Your responsibility is not production.
It is position.
Stay in the vine.
Stay dependent.
Stay faithful.
Stay renewed.
Invitation
If you’ve never been connected—come.
If you’ve drifted—return.
If you’re abiding—guard it.
Do not coast.
Do not substitute habit for hunger.
Do not replace devotion with duty.
Jesus is not asking for more effort.
He is asking for more nearness.
One day.
At a time.
“Abide in me, and I in you.”
